Safety at School

The CSULB Campus Police are sworn law enforcement officers. Their website, www.csulb.edu/police, provides a safety report, crime statistics and information on their various programs.

CSULB has an Emergency Notification System that will be used to keep the community advised in the event of an emergency. Through this system the university is able to provide emergency information via home telephones, cell phones, text messages and e-mails. Complete information on the Emergency Notification System, as well as instructions on how to update your information is available online.

It is important to know that for a campus this size, CSULB is a relatively safe school. Most of the troubles that do arise occur when students do not take responsibility for their belongings or take risks they would never take at home.

Here are a few reminders about how your student can stay safe and avoid problems while on campus:
    • Never leave a backpack, purse, or valuables unattended - even for a minute!
    • Park in well-lit areas
    • Call the escort service at (562) 985-4101 and have them walk or drive you to your vehicle
    • Travel in groups at night. If ever alone, contact the escort service
    • Use the campus shuttles to travel to and from the parking lots
    • Know the locations of the Blue Emergency Telephones
    • Use a safety device to avoid auto theft
    • Never prop doors open in living areas or leave room doors unlocked
    • Safeguard keys, computer equipment, or expensive belongings
    • Carry minimum amounts of cash and watch credit card loss
    • Protect your personal information such as ID or Social Security Numbers, address, etc. Be sure not to give out personal information to anyone unknown, over the phone, or on the web.

Safety on campus is only possible through the teamwork of students, campus police, and other members of the college community working together. Safety isn't handled by someone else; everyone needs to take responsibility for themselves and for those around them.
