COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: The Big Picture

It is our goal for Alliance students to build stronger ties to the campus community, create new friendships, and gain valuable volunteer experiences that may apply to their personal and/or professional goals. By participating in Community Involvement, students have the opportunity to:

  • Create contacts for potential jobs and internships
  • Interact with CSULB peers, staff and faculty members
  • Enhance communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Develop new friendships
  • Increase awareness and connection with campus and community resources
  • Foster leadership abilities and develop other professional skills

Want to Do Additional Service?

The CSULB campus constantly contacts the Learning Alliance to provide volunteers.  If you want to do more service than what we require, considering signing up for:

  • Student Research Competition – learn about research opportunities on campus while timekeeping presentations on Friday, March 7th, 12 noon – 4 pm
  • Push Cart Grand Prix – assist Student Services staff at Homecoming on Saturday, March 8th, 12 noon – 3 pm
  • Job Fair – work with the Career Development Center staff on Thursday, March 20th or Thursday, April 17th to escort employers or assist with set-up/clean-up anytime between 8 am – 5 pm
  • I’m Going to College Day at Long Beach City College – serve as a mentor to local school children as they learn about college opportunities on Friday, April 4th, 8 am – 2 pm
  • ASI Blood Drive – work the check-in desk on Monday, April 28th or Tuesday, April 29th anytime between 8 am – 6 pm
  • Commencement Flower Sales – help the Alumni Association raise money on Wednesday, May 28th or Thursday, May 29th between 7 am – 7 pm

For more information or to sign up, contact Mary Gillis at mgillis@csulb.edu or (562) 985-7804 to work any of these events.

Semester Options

Our community involvement options are intended to build relationships not only with the campus and outside community, but between our students. These options are designed so that you can complete your service while also meeting other Alliance students. Sign ups for Spring 2008 have ended.
