Making a Difference with Leadership – C/LA 490B – Spring 2013
The overall purpose of this course is to encourage students to analyze their responsibilities and commitments in the context of leadership for the common good and for purposeful change. The course is more than the study of leadership; it is designed to help students develop their leadership potential at CSULB and in society. This course will encourage a high level of class discussion and active participation. Students will reflect on leadership in their own life, participate in group interactions, contribute to the campus community, interact with experienced leaders, and discuss the impact of current events and the realities of leadership.
College of Liberal Arts 490 is a three-unit course designed to:
- Provide an engaging and stimulating climate for all members of the class to explore leadership, organizations, and the relevant themes of the course
- Foster a respectful learning environment through dialogue and support of difference of opinion and thoughts
- Establish an atmosphere for students to enhance their leadership skills and apply theory to practice in their respective organizations, groups, and personal lives
Throughout the semester, the course will concentrate on developing five general competencies:
- Community - Community Engagement, Student Success Efforts, College Student Development Models
- Leadership - Leadership and Followership Theories, Leader Identities and Styles, Mentoring Roles and Responsibilities, Ethics and Standards
- Experience - Presentation Pointers, Facilitation Techniques, Event/Meeting Design, Creating Forums
- Assessment - Personal Goals, Self-Development, Exploration of Skills and Abilities
- Resources - Insider Insights into University Structures and Organization, Campus Resources and Services, Who to Know and Where to Go
As an experiential course, students will be expected to work with all students from the class, welcome visiting speakers (i.e. College of Liberal Arts Dean, CSULB President, ASI Leadership, Community Action Leaders, etc.), and to come prepared to each class session having done the reading and work associated with the course.
