STUDENTS TOUR STAPLES CENTER

LT 17 Magic Johnson

The newest batch of CSULB Sport Management students took in class last week at the "Sports and Entertainment Center of the World," the STAPLES Center. The students were given a complete tour of the venue by CSULB Sport Management alum Devon Murray, a current STAPLES Center Event Manager. Murray, a graduate of the program in 2006, was proud to give the tour as "these types of [tours] helped me when I was in the program."

After the tour, the students were invited to watch the Los Angeles Sparks clinch a playoff spot with a victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars in one of STAPLES Center's luxury suites. The General Manager of the Sparks, Penny Toler, was on hand to talk to the class about the day-to-day challenges of being the general manager of the Sparks. Toler, who led an animated discussion, is a member of the CSULB Sport Management Advisory Committee and also spoke at the program's annual Luncheon in January.

Manager of Student Affairs and Sparks season-ticket holder, Diane Higgs, appreciates when those connected to the program give back commenting that "the fact that Devon and Penny took time out of their day to impart their knowledge is encouraging because it shows that our program is slowly but surely branching out into all corners of the local sport industry."

The students took the trip in conjunction with their Foundations in Sport Management class, taught by Cindy Jarvis.
