More information on Dr. Karen White:

Dr. Karen White attended the University of Michigan, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy, a master’s degree in human nutrition, and master’s and doctoral degrees in kinesiology.  She has a long-standing interest in people with disabilities; the special needs of such individuals, their adaptive responses to therapy and training, and the accommodations necessary to help them succeed in society.

In the 1990s she was on faculty in the physical therapy professional programs at the University of Michigan, Flint and the University of Kansas Medical Center.  She specialized in the areas of cardiopulmonary and geriatric physical therapy.  She has also worked as a physical therapist in several clinical settings.

From 1998-2004, Dr. White was on faculty in the Exercise Science Department at Oregon State University, where she worked closely with undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing medical careers. She also managed three NIH grants related to preventing falls and hip fractures among older adults.

In 2004 White moved to Moscow, Idaho when her husband, Dr. Timothy White, became President of the University of Idaho.  While there, she founded and directed the Operation Education Scholarship Program.  Operation Education is the nation’s leading scholarship and assistance program for disabled military veterans.  This scholarship program was the first of its kind in the nation and provides financial, academic and social support to disabled, post 9/11 veterans (and their spouses) while they pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree.  She advocated for the Operation Education program around the nation encouraging other campuses to initiate similar programs.

From 2008-2012, Dr. White was Associate of the Chancellor at the University of California Riverside, where she served as a liaison between the University and the community, sitting on several boards and committees both on campus and within the community.  She launched the third Operation Education scholarship program on the UCR campus in the Fall of 2010.  The UCR program currently supports eight students and has raised over $50,000 for scholarships.  She was also an Assistant Clinical Professor for the UCR Biomedical Sciences Program.

Although she maintains her faculty appointment at UCR and continues to work closely with the UCR Operation Education scholars, her loyalties now reside with the California State University system.  She looks forward to becoming involved with causes and projects throughout the state to further the mission of The California State University.
