Jillian (Mary Ann) Jimenez has a Ph.D. in American History and a Ph.D. in Social Policy from Brandeis University. She received her M.A. in Literature from UCLA and an M.S.W. from San Diego State University. Dr. Jimenez taught American History for eight years at Pitzer College, Claremont, California before coming to California State University, Long Beach. She currently teaches Social Policy and Thesis at the Department of Social Work and is the Editor of Reflections, the Department's peer reviewed journal of narratives. She has won numerous awards, including a Graves Fellowship for Teaching Excellence and a Silberman Grant for her research on the history of African American grandmothers. Dr. Jimenez has published widely on the intersection of history and policy in the areas of mental health, child welfare policy, HIV and AIDS and welfare policy. Her new book on social policy, Social Policy and Social Change: Toward Social and Economic Justice was published in Summer 2009 by Sage Press. In it she offers an historical analysis of social problems and an economic analysis of how capitalism and the market economy have contributed to social problems and impacted social policies.
