Professor Koob has over 20 years of social work practice experience in university, medical, and child welfare settings. He entered academia in 1998 where he teaches generalist practice courses, research, and thesis to masters level students. His courses emphasize the infusion of ethical, multicultural, and evidence-based practice. In 1980 he worked and trained with Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, the developers of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, at Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Based on their model, he developed Solution-Focused Supervision. He has been invited nationally and internationally to present his style of supervision. Locally he developed Solution-Focused curricula for Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) for a one-year grant; the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) to improve the life trajectory of foster children, and; Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to assist school social workers and teachers in helping students become academically successful. Currently, he is developing Solution-Focused Teaching. His research interests focus on the evaluation of social work interventions in various practice settings, i.e., educational, child welfare, substance abuse, and medical.
