The Tessie Cleveland Committee is named in honor of Dr. Tessie Cleveland, a nationally honored social worker, educator and administrator that served as faculty in our Department for several years.

Inspired by her example, the Committee’s mission is to provide an opportunity for Social Work students on campus to become educated about, exchange ideas and offer service to the African American community. In the fall of 2007 the Committee organized a very successful toy, book, sports equipment and school supply drive that benefited needy families locally and abroad.  Donations were given to the Sickle Cell Foundation, His Sheltering Arms, AFACT (A Foundation for African Children Today), and the Congress for Racial Equality. Over 200 hundred items were donated!

Please join us this year as we plan our activities including a Black History Month celebration on February 18, 2008 in the USU Ballroom at 12:30 pm.  Join us on 2-18-08 to meet activists working  with African Americans in the areas of health, education, juvenile justice and political action.  Later in the Semester there will also be participation in a service project focusing on HIV/AIDS education in the African American community.

Committee meetings for the Semester will occur on: 02/04/08, 02/25/08, 3/24/08, 4/28/08 and 05/12/08 from 12:00 pm-1:00 pm in SPA 102.  Look for flyers announcing the meeting locations outside the Social Work Office.

We welcome all students and hope that you will join us! For more information and to join, please contact our Co-Chair, Shannon McElroy (akasmac1908@aol.com) or Dr. Yolanda R. Green, Faculty Advisor, at (ygreen@csulb.edu), 562-985-8312.
