Welcome to the Department of Recreation & Leisure Studies

A Tradition of Excellence

California State University, Long Beach graduated its first recreation student in 1953, just four years after the legislature created the university. An independent Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies was created in 1965 under the guidance of Dr. David Gray. National accreditation of the program by the National Recreation and Parks Association/American Association for Leisure and Recreation Council on Accreditation has been awarded continuously since 1982.

Outstanding Faculty

Each of the tenure track faculty in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies has either achieved the following awards or has been active in the following research and community services

  • Joanne "Joanie" Conley: Is working with a group of our alums on the upcoming RALSAA Golf Tournament and Fundraiser.
  • Katherine "KJ" James: Received promotion to full professor and will receive a sabbatical next academic year.
  • Maridith Janssen: Is working with the Boeing Corporation and Raytheon on a Pre-retirement Leisure Education program for Aeronautical Engineers
  • Carolin Lusby: Is our newest faculty member and is actively pursuing research involving marine cruisers and scuba divers.
  • Susan Mathieu: Is working with Long Beach Senior Center on her Happiness and Humor Research. She is running a monthly group at the Senior Center on 4th Street.
  • Kenneth Silverberg: Is actively working on his community based research in volunteer management.

Award Winning Students

Once again our students have been very successful in being awarded scholarships through the California Foundation for Parks and Recreation.

This year at the annual CPRS Conference nine of our students will be awarded scholarships totaling over $10,000.00.

Hello Recreation and Leisure Studies Alumni & Friends;

The Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at California State University Long Beach is hosting its 1st Annual RALSAA Golf Tournament on Friday, May 23, 2008. The event will be held at Recreation Park Golf Course in Long Beach.

The event will have Check in and the Silent Auction at 11:00am, Shotgun Start at 1:00pm and the Dinner and Awards immediately following the tournament.

The cost is $125.00 per person. The deadline to register is May 12, 2008.

Accreditation Update

In September, at the annual NPRA conference in Indianapolis, IN, the Department was awarded re-accrediation through the Council on Accreditation (COA). This re-accreditation marks the 25 year that the Department has been accrediated through NRPA and the COA. The final review of the Council was re-accrediation with commendations for a job well done.

When: June 2nd - June 6th, 2008

Where: Parson’s Landing, Catalina Island

Cost: $ 850. total cost (payable to UCES when you register for the class)

Tuition for 3 credits through UCES= $ 600.00

Boat fees = $ 100.00

Camping fees and food = $ 150.00

Course Information:

Study of the skills and techniques of administration of an ocean-oriented recreational resource, including management and trip planning. Course content will be supplemented with a week long field trip to Catalina Island.

The California Park and Recreation Society Conference held in Long Beach February 26-29, 2008 was a huge success. Many students from the department Volunteered to help with multiple duties at the conference.
