California State University, Long Beach graduated its first recreation student in 1953, just four years after the legislature created the university. An independent Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies was created in 1965 under the guidance of Dr. David Gray. National accreditation of the program by the National Recreation and Parks Association/American Association for Leisure and Recreation Council on Accreditation has been awarded continuously since 1982.
Each of the tenure track faculty in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies has either achieved the following awards or has been active in the following research and community services
Once again our students have been very successful in being awarded scholarships through the California Foundation for Parks and Recreation.
This year at the annual CPRS Conference nine of our students will be awarded scholarships totaling over $10,000.00.

Hello Recreation and Leisure Studies Alumni & Friends;
The Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at California State University Long Beach is hosting its 1st Annual RALSAA Golf Tournament on Friday, May 23, 2008. The event will be held at Recreation Park Golf Course in Long Beach.
The event will have Check in and the Silent Auction at 11:00am, Shotgun Start at 1:00pm and the Dinner and Awards immediately following the tournament.
The cost is $125.00 per person. The deadline to register is May 12, 2008.

In September, at the annual NPRA conference in Indianapolis, IN, the Department was awarded re-accrediation through the Council on Accreditation (COA). This re-accreditation marks the 25 year that the Department has been accrediated through NRPA and the COA. The final review of the Council was re-accrediation with commendations for a job well done.

Course Information:
Study of the skills and techniques of administration of an ocean-oriented recreational resource, including management and trip planning. Course content will be supplemented with a week long field trip to Catalina Island.

The California Park and Recreation Society Conference held in Long Beach February 26-29, 2008 was a huge success. Many students from the department Volunteered to help with multiple duties at the conference.
