Norm Stanger was born in Pasadena, California on December 8, 1922. After World War II, in which he served on a navel submarine, Norm graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He continued his education at USC and UCLA where he received his master's and doctoral degrees. Norm taught in secondary and community college programs, served as the Orange County Director of Vocational Education, and was appointed by President Nixon to the National Advisory Council on Vocational Education. In the early 1970's, along with former Dean C. Thomas Dean, Norm originated the Master of Arts degree in Vocational Education. Longtime faculty and staff remember Norm as humorous, unpredictable, and wise.
Dr. Stanger retired from teaching in 1984, but remained active in departmental affairs. Never one to slow down for anything, after retirement Norm was the recipient of numerous awards for his paintings, particularly his watercolors, which he displayed and sold in a variety of locations. He was at home in Kona, Hawaii, and in Huntington Harbor with his wife, Janice, where he shared his passion for life, laughter, and the ocean with his many friends and family.
Dr. Stanger passed away at home on August 3, 1999 shortly after having minor surgery. His memorial service was held at Huntington Harbor Yacht Club in Huntington Beach, California and he was interred in his beloved ocean. His warmth, humor, and friendship will be sorely missed. The Department of Professional Studies has since established the Norman Stanger Memorial Scholarship Fund through the CSULB Foundation. We are hoping to raise enough funding to set up an endowment for deserving graduate students who need assistance with their tuition and/or book fees. We hope to raise $10,000 to endow this effort. Janice Stanger and the department thank all of you who have contributed to the fund thus far.
