The Designated Subjects Credential (DSC) program at CSULB was developed to meet the competencies specified by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). The program is accredited by the National Council on the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and approved by CCTC. This two-level program first helps occupational and adult teachers develop survival-level classroom skills and then assists them in making the transition to full-time professional educators. All courses in the DSC program are applicable to bachelor's and master’s degrees, and are offered at times convenient to working individuals with families. Many of the courses that meet credential requirements are available on-line via the Internet. Housed under the Professional Studies Department, the program offers four types of credentials:

To qualify for an academic subject area, an applicant must have a bachelors or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution, have passed the CBEST and have a minimum number of 20 lower division or 10 upper division semester units in the desired subject matter. Some non-academic subject titles are also available under this option. Eligibility for non-academic subject titles is based on a combination of education and experience, and may not require a bachelor's degree..
This credential is required to teach any CTE subject matter in a public institution (adult school, high school, vocational school, or ROP setting). Eligibility is also based on a combination of education and experience.
