Professional Studies Vision

The vision of the Department of Professional Studies at California State University, Long Beach is to be recognized as a leader among institutions of higher education through its high quality programs for adult learners.

The Department Mission

The mission of the Department of Professional Studies to offer undergraduate and graduate academic programs and lifelong learning opportunities for adults who seek professional transition, advancement, and leadership roles in their professions.  The department fulfills its mission through achievement of goals in the following areas:

Curriculum. To create, assess, and continuously improve a high quality curriculum that incorporates the latest scholarship, utilizes students' personal and professional experiences, prepares students to contribute to their professions and to society, and satisfies other educational needs of adult learners.

Faculty. To recruit and retain faculty who strive for excellence in teaching and research, who participate in Department, College and University affairs, who continuously develop their skills and expertise, and who reflect the diversity of society.

Staff.  To recruit, train, promote and retain dedicated staff who are committed to the delivery of excellent student services and who continuously support faculty and students.

Students. To attract a dedicated, talented, and diverse student population and to provide for them an academic environment which values their input as students, fellow professionals, and  alumni, and which responds to their professional development and educational needs.

Research. To encourage and assist faculty in conducting research in their professional fields, and in sharing their findings with the academic, professional and student communities.

Instructional and Learning Systems. To develop approaches to teaching, learning, and measurement of outcomes; which include the use of alternative scheduling, distance learning, and educational technology that are fully responsive to the needs of adult students and to the communities and professions to be served.
