Courses for Alumni

Two PT 619 lecture/demonstration/lab course sections are scheduled for Spring, 2008. Graduates can register through University Extension (UCES) for 2 units at $200/unit for each of the sections of PT 619: Contemporary Issues in Physical Therapy. Location of both classes is HSD 103. Level of Instruction is Basic for both sections.1/23/08: Because you cannot take two sections of 619 in one semester, we had to change the wound course to PT 597, Independent Studies./

Section 1: Differential Diagnosis and Musculoskeletal Imaging, Instructor: Steven Graboff, MD. Dr. Graboff is an orthopedist practicing in Orange county, CA. He has lectured on orthopedics for physical therapists in PT 622, Clinical Pathophysiology for approximately 10 years. Dr. Graboff is designing this course to be presented from 8am -1pm, March 15 and 22, April 19 and 26, and May 3 and 10. Breaks will be from 10:30-11:00 am. Recommended Texts are:

  • Goodman, Catherine and Snyder, Teresa (2007). Differential Diagnosis for Physical Therapists: Screening for Referral. Ed 4, St Louis, Elsevier.
  • McKinnis, Lynn N. (2005). Fundamentals of Musculoskeletal Imaging. Ed 2, Philadelphia, FA Davis

Objectives : After completion of the course, the attendee will:

  • Explain the role of the physical therapist for referral for patients to other health professionals.
  • Recognize red flag signs and symptoms for referral which may be present in persons with common neuromusculoskeletal disorders.
  • Contrast uses of different imaging techniques in neuromusculoskeletal disorders.
  • Explain results of imaging tests in lay terms for patients being treated by physical therapists.  

Section 2: Current Concepts in Wound Care, Instructor: Cindy Van Steelandt. Cindy will again present this excellent course for four consecutive Saturdays: February 2, 9, 16 and 23 from 8 am to 5pm. No text is required. Instructor will provide written notes.

Course outline is: 1) Skin anatomy and physiology, 2) Tissue repair, 3) Wound classifications, 4) Interventions for wound bed preparation, 5) Wound assessment, 6) Further interventions, 7) Wound care team, 8) Social and legal aspects, 8) Lab, and 9) Case studies.
