 Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program


The Department of Nursing at California State University, Long Beach has been educating Master’s prepared nurses for over 30 years. The Nursing programs at CSULB are fully accredited by the Board of Registered Nursing in the State of California and nationally accredited by the CCNE. In addition, the PNP program is accredited by the National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses. The Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program at CSULB is well-known for its excellence in educating nurses to provide health care to children. Graduates of the program will possess advanced education in nursing with expertise in pediatric clinical practice, culturally sensitive health care, research and clinical leadership. The program consists of 36/37 units that can be completed through either full-time or part-time study. Students complete course work in advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology, advanced physical assessment, health care policy, nursing theory and roles, human diversity, research and pediatric theory. Students complete 586 hours of clinical experience in ambulatory pediatrics. In addition to working in other clinical sites within the community, PNP students have a unique opportunity to complete clinical hours on Health on Wheels. Health on Wheels is a nurse managed school-based clinic providing health care to the underserved children in the City of Norwalk. Students have the opportunity to complete a thesis or a comprehensive examination to fulfill the Master’s degree. Master’s degree requirements must be completed within 7 years.


Admission Requirements  Top

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing, preferred. Other health-related degrees will be considered.
  • Current RN license or eligibility to practice nursing in California.
  • Grade point average of 2.75 or better in upper division units of the Bachelor’s degree
  • Upper division course in community health nursing with a laboratory (usually completed in BSN programs).
  • Upper division statistics course.
  • Upper division or graduate level course in pathophysiology and passing a competency examination upon acceptance to program.
  • Physical assessment course, including a clinical laboratory component, within the past 5 years. Competency will be verified by written test and skill demonstration upon acceptance to program.
  • Growth and Development course and passing a competency examination upon acceptance to program.

School Nurse Services Credential Program  Top

The School Nurse Services Credential (SNSC) Program is a post-Master’s Program. An applicant must be either a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner with a Master’s in Nursing or a student enrolled in the CSULB Master’s Degree in Nursing program, who has completed the pediatric nurse practitioner coursework. The SNSC program allows the individual to complete the necessary coursework required by the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for the SNSC. There are four additional courses focusing solely on the role of the school nurse that the student is eligible to enroll in after the PNP Master’s program is completed.
