The Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics and Food Administration with an option in Nutrition and Dietetics prepares students for diverse and rewarding careers. Study is concentrated in the areas of nutritional science, medical nutrition therapy, community nutrition, food production and administration of foodservice operations, chemistry, physiology, plus a variety of supporting coursework in related disciplines. The Nutrition and Dietetics option fulfills the American Dietetic Association (ADA) academic requirements to become a Registered Dietitian with the selection of appropriate electives. The student is responsible for reviewing the program requirements in the CSULB Catalog and Didactic Program in the Dietetics Student Manual.
Students must complete a minimum of 131 units to receive the B.S. degree in Dietetics and Food Administration with an option in Nutrition and Dietetics. In addition to fulfilling general education requirements, a minimum of 40 units in Family and Consumer Sciences is required, 24 of which must be upper division. Students need to refer to the CSULB Catalog for specific graduation requirements.

The American Dietetic Association
The Nutrition and Dietetics option with appropriate elective selection fulfills the American Dietetic Association (ADA) academic requirements for eligibility to apply for qualifying experiences required to become a Registered Dietitian.
The ADA Didactic Program is designed to provide students with a foundation of knowledge and skills in dietetics that will enable them to perform successfully in a dietetic internship or pre-professional practice program. The DPD is currently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of the ADA. It is the responsibility of the student to consult with the DPD Didactic Program director to verify current requirements to become a Registered Dietitian.

Students who wish to take the Nutrition and Dietetics Option as a Pre-Professional degree (e.g., medical) should check with the appropriate programs to verify specific requirements.
Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD)
The American Dietetic Association (ADA) DPD is the academic program designed to provide students with a foundation of knowledge and skills in dietetics that will enable them to perform successfully in a dietetic internship. The DPD is granted accreditation by the American Dietetic Association Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education, a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation and the United States Department of Education. It is the responsibility of the student to consult with the ADA DPD Director to verify current ADA requirements to become a Registered Dietitian.
Students must receive a grade of “C” or better in the DPD courses to receive verification of completion of the ADA program. Approval of a student’s academic program by the CSULB DPD Director requires that the student complete specific courses, some of which must be taken at CSULB.
Student Involvement
Extracurricular activities, various internships and guest speakers provide students with knowledge about the many varied career opportunities in nutrition and dietetics. Activities include networking, attending professional meetings, and on-site tours of various industry facilities, plus more. In addition, students have the opportunity to become involved and take leadership positions in the Student Dietetic Association (SDA).
Individuals choosing Nutrition and Dietetics will concentrate their studies in the areas of nutritional science, medical nutrition therapy, community nutrition, food production and administration of foodservice operations, chemistry, physiology, plus a variety of supporting course work in related fields.
