Our Purpose

The Ukleja Center aims to be a beacon of applied ethics.  We base our actions on three pillars that are our guiding lights: Education, the way we teach CSULB students about ethical behavior; University Research, how we engage faculty members to conduct research on ethical leadership; and Community Outreach, offering activities and programs, both across campus and with communities beyond the University’s boundaries, that emphasize the power of ethics in leadership and practice.

The core principles of the Ukleja Center are our:

  • Mission: Equipping people with the transformational power of ethical leadership.
  • Vision: Building better communities through knowledge that informs ethical practice.
  • Core Values: Integrity, Servant Leadership, Excellence, Empowerment, and Abundance.

The College of Business Administration seeks to graduate high-quality, ethical business professionals prepared to excel in a dynamic global business environment.  The University is committed to providing highly-valued graduates to serve the people of California and the world.  The Ukleja Center plays an important role in developing and disseminating the principles of ethical behavior and their application to help the CBA and University accomplish their purpose.

What is Ethical Leadership?

The American Heritage Dictionary defines ethics as a set of principles of right conduct and a theory or system of moral values.  It defines to lead as guiding in direction, course, action, or opinion.  Embracing ethical leadership can help individuals understand the correct actions that are needed to build the better communities that we envision.  Our firm belief is that each of us will benefit if indeed the Ukleja Center achieves its goals and objectives.

Values are qualities that we hold to be desirable and worthy.  Without a sturdy set of values, action and behavior lack a sense of direction and focus.  Without a foundation of values, the Ukleja Center would be unlikely to realize its envisioned future.  Here’s more about our values:

Through integrity, individuals adhere to ethical behavior in a conscious and consistent manner.  Servant leadership encourages leaders to exhibit stewardship of an organization’s resources and to have a willingness to serve those who follow while focusing on achieving the organization’s mission and vision.  Excellence is the quality of superior performance and the possession of exemplary qualities in high degree.  In all of our initiatives, the Ukleja Center seeks to promote excellent behavior and outcomes.  Empowerment is a process that allows individuals to gain the knowledge, skill sets, and attitude needed to cope with a changing world (from Wikipedia).  Abundance is a plentiful, overflowing fullness.  We consider it to be a process through which individuals first give of themselves and then receive abundance in return.

The Ukleja Center’s values provide guidance and a moral compass for individuals to apply ethical behavior in their lives.  How ethical leadership is transmitted to actual practice requires Education, Research, and Outreach.  In short, the three pillars upon which the Ukleja Center is founded are essential tools for empowering our constituents to embody ethics in leadership and to demonstrate ethical behavior in their lives.
