Message from the Director
Welcome to the web site for the Ukleja Center for Ethical Leadership. Our goal is to help transform individuals and build better communities through ethical leadership and behavior. Our emphasis is on application and practice. As you review our web pages, you will learn about our vision, values, and endeavors. You also will find that we offer programs that support the ethical development of our students, enhance scholarship along ethical dimensions for our faculty, and promote the weaving of ethics practice into the fabric of the communities in which our many constituents live, work, and interact.
As an approved University center (by Academic Senate Policy 98-10), the Ukleja Center conducts research, performs community service, and/or provides instruction and special training to make a significant contribution to the mission of the University by focusing on a specific area of an interdisciplinary nature – in this case, developing ethics in leadership and practice. We operate within a well-defined organizational and governance structure and offer programs that benefit students, engage faculty, and bring leaders to campus who share experiences and insights gained from facing ethical challenges in their professional lives.
The Ukleja Center’s logo contains what look like three Greek columns. They represent three dimensions that summarize how we put our plans into action and the foundation for our efforts: Education about ethical behavior, University Research that enhances scholarship on ethical leadership, and Community Outreach that emphasizes the practice of ethical leadership. We have organized our web site along the dimensions of the three pillars and you will learn more about them as you examine this site.
The University’s mission is to be “a diverse, student-centered, globally-engaged public university committed to providing highly-valued undergraduate and graduate educational opportunities through superior teaching, research, creative activity, and service for the people of California and the world.” The Ukleja Center’s education, scholarship, and service objectives fit well with the University’s mission, and we are proud to have an opportunity to extend the reach of its academic programs. We draw students from majors across colleges and faculty from disciplines throughout the university, and we connect people both inside and outside of the campus.
I think you will see that we have a sincere commitment to the application of ethical principles and offer a rich set of activities that will promote ethical practice. By reviewing our web site you will gain a fuller understanding about who we are, what we do, and what we hope to achieve. I think you will enjoy and appreciate all that you find here. Happy reading!
