Dean's Update, August 16, 2013

Master of Science Proposals under Review at Chancellor's Office; Acting Directors Named

The Chancellor’s Office began the review and approval process in June for our three MS proposals in Accountancy, Global Supply Chain Management, and Information Systems. We hit a roadblock on July 31 when the CO declined to approve MSGSM as a self-support program run through CCPE. AVP Cecile Lindsay, AVP Jeet Joshee, and I are working through the issues, and AVP Lindsay will send the CO a letter explaining our proposal and requesting reconsideration. AVP Lindsay also requested that the review of MSA and MSIS be put on hold until the issues regarding MSGSCM are resolved. I am hopeful that satisfactory solutions will be found that will lead to CO approval for each of the three MS proposals. I don’t have any more information to add at the present time but will provide updates as things unfold.

In the meantime, if we hope to enroll our first MS cohorts in Fall 2014, work on the MS programs must continue; there might even be a need to re-write or modify the current proposals given Chancellor’s Office concerns. Also, examining all options on how to offer the proposed programs is likely to be necessary (e.g., self-support, state-side, on-line, etc.)

In consultation with the Department Chairs, I have appointed acting directors for the MS programs as follows: Sudha Krishnan, MSA; Sherry Su, MSGSCM, and Michael Chung, MSIS. While I anticipate finding solutions for CO concerns and finding ways to implement the programs in Fall 2014, the acting directors will be important in moving us forward over the coming year.

I also anticipate conducting department-based searches during Spring Semester for permanent directors using the appropriate search protocol.
