Graduate Greek conducting student Yiannis Protopapas will conduct a piece by Greece’s most famous composer, Dimitri Mitropoulos. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition describes paintings by Victor Hartmann from the point of view of a visitor strolling through the gallery.

Strauss’ famous tone poem, Don Juan, is a standard classical string audition piece. The complexity of this composition is well-known and feared among orchestral players. This work demonstrates the maturing virtuosity of the BCCM orchestra, who have previously tackled Ein Heldenleben, Don Quixote, Till Eulenspiegel, and Death and Transfiguration. Higdon’s famous descriptive work and a movement from Bruckner’s Romantic symphony coupled with a student concerto will round out the program.

Every semester we host two combo nights at the Nugget Grill & Pub on the upper campus. Three combos are featured at each combo night and the event is always very popular. The smaller jazz groups allow improvisers to stretch out more than in big band settings. Typically the programs feature student arrangements and compositions, as well as their unique renditions of historically relevant small group material.
