In this Double Bill Concert, the University Choir will present Nevertheless, She Persisted—selections they will perform as a featured ensemble at the California Choral Directors Association State Conference in San José. This set features music of women composers and arrangers including Felicia Sandler, Shireen Abu-Khader, Andrea Clearfield, and Andrea Ramsey. Chamber Choir will present Of Love and Protest—a set of pieces celebrating love and protest featuring the new composition This is How You Love by married couple composing duo Jocelyn Hagen and Timothy C. Experience the visually stunning 2015 Oscar winner for Best Picture by maverick director Alejandro Iñárritu accompanied live by renowned jazz drummer Antonio Sánchez, recreating his explosive, Grammy Award winning score that provides the heartbeat of the film. Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) is a kinetic film experience that plays like a single, continuous sequence of events, with Sánchez’s drums supplying the energy and drive that underlines the emotional weight of the story and perfectly expresses the restless intensity of the characters. Antonio Sánchez is “one of the most accomplished and in-demand drummers in jazz.” (NPR)

Piaf! The Show is a musical fête to the legendary French chanteuse Edith Piaf. This acclaimed French production stars Anne Carrere a “legitimate musical heiress” to Piaf with a “soaring voice” (The Guardian). The show narrates the rags-to-riches story of the Parisian singer’s career through her unforgettable songs, complemented by a visual tapestry of previously unreleased photographs and images of Edith Piaf’s Paris.

Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 concludes the evening.

The powerhouse Argentinian ensemble, Che Malambo, celebrates the South American cowboy tradition of the gaucho with their percussive dance and music spectacles. Malambo originated in the 17th century as a competitive duel testing strength, agility, and dexterity among the gaucho. Evolving to include zapateo, the fast-paced footwork inspired by galloping horses, malambo incorporates the drumming of traditional Argentine bombos and whirling boleadoras, a throwing weapon made up of intertwined cords and weighted with stones.
