Support Marine Biology

Community members and alumni provide incredibly important support to students in the marine biology program through annual giving, and through support of endowed scholarships and research grants. If you are able to join in to help these students, please follow one of the links below! If you are interested in establishing a new fund, please contact us! All donations are tax deductible.

Marine Biology Catalina Semester Scholarship Fund

This fund supports students attending the annual Catalina Semester program at Wrigley Marine Science Center. During this semester, students take three upper division marine biology courses (all taught with intensive field work) and carry out an independent research project. Participating in this semester is financially challenging for most students; this fund helps to make it feasible for as many students as possible.

Marine Lab Support Fund

CSULB's Marine Lab is heavily used for classroom support and research in marine biology. Many of our students work in the Marine Lab, learning skills in organism collection and captive husbandry. The Marine Technician and her volunteers also host tours by hundreds of K-12 students every semester. But marine labs are always challenging to maintain! This fund is used to support supplies and new equipment for the marine lab to helps students and faculty conduct new types of research.

Handloser Graduate Tuition Grant Program

This endowed fund was established in 2006 by the estate of the late Robert Handloser, a CSULB alumnus and a strong supporter of the marine biology program. Proceeds are used to offer tuition grants to outstanding entering graduate students working on marine biological projects. As tuition costs continue to increase, it is necessary to grow the endowment so that the annual proceeds yield at least one award.

Donald Reish Student Research Grant Program

This endowed fund was established in 2007 in the name of Dr. Donald Reish, emeritus faculty member in the marine biology program at CSULB. The endowment has been funded by generous donations from Dr. Reish, his former students, and other generous alumni. Proceeds from the fund are given to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students to support their research in marine biology.
