Math Placement

The course recommendations provided here are determined based on your degree objectives at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) and your level of preparations in mathematics, including:

  • high school GPA
  • senior year mathematics experience
  • math SAT/ACT scores
  • AP/IB/CLEP exam scores

In general, the recommended courses are the highest level of mathematics courses you are eligible to take, which will help reduce the number of courses you will need to complete your degree.

Degree Objective

The first factor in determining your math placement is your major. If you are undeclared, use the major or field that you are most strongly considering, but you should also consult your advisor from the University Center for Undergraduate Advising (UCUA).

You may already have credit for a required course. Check the section labeled "Course Credit" below.

Please note that the information below is only a guide and not a substitute for academic advising; you will work with an academic advisor to determine your actual math placement.

ALEKS Mathematics Placement

The Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS) Mathematics Placement Program at CSULB is designed to provide students whose degree objective requires Precalculus or Calculus an opportunity to place higher into a mathematics course that they are currently not eligible for based on multiple measures of academic preparation. The purpose of the ALEKS Mathematics Placement Program is to assess your mathematics skills and place you into an appropriate college mathematics course.

The ALEKS Mathematics Placement Program consists of 4 assessments. There is a 48 hour cool-off period after each assessment; during the cool-off period you work on the Prep and Learning Module for at least 5 hours to improve your knowledge for the next assessment.

Incoming Freshmen

You should receive our ALEKS Mathematics Placement Program information directly from CSULB Enrollment Services if you are eligible to participate. After you receive the placement information, you may log into the ALEKS Mathematics Placement site through Single Sign-On.

You should allow yourself two weeks to complete the program. The final assessment is required to be completed at least ten days before your SOAR date. Your ALEKS assessment score is available through your ALEKS account and you will enroll in the highest mathematics course you qualify for at your SOAR registration.

Placement

The general placement scheme is as follows:

ALEKS Score Course Placement*
46 or higher MATH 113 or MATH 115
70 or higher MATH 119A
80 or higher MATH 122

*Other factors, such as AP/IB/CLEP credit, may affect final math placement.

Early Start Mathematics

The Early Start Mathematics (ESM) program is intended to give incoming freshmen the opportunity to enroll in mathematics classes, with instructional support, prior to the term for which they have been admitted. This program is designed to better prepare students for the first semester of college and to help them improve their skills in mathematics.

The program takes place the summer before the freshman year and courses will be available at all CSU campuses with additional options to take courses online. All incoming CSU freshmen are welcome to participate in the ESM program. You should receive participation information directly from CSULB Enrollment Services. For information about your eligibility and ways to register for an ESM class at CSULB, contact Enrollment Services.

ESM 100 Course

At CSULB, we offer morning and afternoon sections of ESM 100 – Algebra, Geometry and their Applications. ESM 100 is a college level one-unit credit/no-credit course that meets once a week for five weeks for a total of 15 hours. The course allows you to advance your mathematics knowledge outside of class in a self-paced learning system called ALEKS and engages you on relevant applications of mathematics with peers in class.

Students successfully completing this course will gain an improved understanding in arithmetic, number sense, algebra, and geometry to be successful in their GE math requirements and to function as educated members of the society.

In ESM 100, you will:

  • have a unique opportunity to try and place into the highest level of mathematics course you are eligible to take for your major at CSULB via ALEKS
  • receive one elective unit toward your degree program at any of the 23 CSU campuses, including CSULB
  • have an opportunity to avoid taking a one-unit co-requisite class when taking a General Education Category B4 mathematics class at CSULB
  • get a head start to meet other freshmen and faculty mentors who can help you navigate through a myriad of requirements and resources during the overwhelming first year of college

Course Materials

Required: A notebook and writing materials. You do not need a calculator.

Optional: There will be a computer for each student in the computer lab. However, if you prefer to work on your own laptop, feel free to bring it.

Course Outcome and Recommendations

This is a Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) course. If you receive CR, it adds one elective unit to your degree program. Additionally, scoring 46 or above on a proctored, on-campus ALEKS assessment enables you to enroll in GE B4 courses without support and can potentially reduce your time to graduation (see note below).

Your grade in this class has no impact on your GPA; however, getting a NC in a CR/NC class is generally not a good sign about your ability to succeed in college. We encourage you to work hard and proactively seek support during your journey in this class in order to start your college career on a high note.

CR: You will receive credit (CR) in ESM 100 if you:

  1. Actively attend all five class meetings, and
  2. satisfactorily complete all assignments, and
  3. spend at least 20 hours actively working in ALEKS's Prep and Learning Modules by the final assessment.

NC: You will receive no-credit (NC) in ESM 100 if you did not satisfy conditions (1), (2), and (3) for CR.

Note: An ALEKS score of 46 or higher enables you to enroll in any of the following General Education Category B4 (GE B4) courses at CSULB without an accompanying support class:

  • HDEV 190
  • MATH 104
  • MATH 111
  • MATH 113
  • MATH 115
  • MTED 110
  • PSY 110
  • SOC 170
  • STAT 108
  • STAT 118

Talk to an advisor in the University Center for Undergraduate Advising (UCUA) or your discipline advisor to determine an appropriate math class to take.

Different CSU campuses have different guidelines for placing students into a GE B4 course. If you are not enrolled at CSULB, consult with an advisor at your destination campus about how the outcome of this Early Start Mathematics course will be interpreted at your home campus.
