Beyond Lip Service: Understanding, Promoting, and Quantifying Equity and Excellence in Urban Education

Lecture By Dr. Donna Ford, Vanderbilt University

This presentation focuses on barriers to equity and excellence in urban education. Key issues are addressed, along with recommendations to close achievement gaps, decrease under-representation in gifted education, and decrease over-representation in special education and discipline. Methods to quantify and set equity goals are introduced. Readings and recommendations are provided. RSVP is Required at Sign-Up Page.

Donna Y. Ford, PhD, is Professor of Education and Human Development and Cornelius Vanderbilt Endowed Chair at Vanderbilt University. She is the former Betts Chair of Education & Human Development, and currently holds a joint appointment in the Department of Special Education and Department of Teaching and Learning. Dr. Ford has been a Professor of Special Education at the Ohio State University, an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Virginia, and an Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky.  \

Professor Ford conducts research primarily in gifted education and multicultural/urban education, and is the author/co-author of several books, including Recruiting and Retaining Culturally Different Students in Gifted Education (2013), Reversing Underachievement Among Gifted Black Students(1996, 2010), Multicultural Gifted Education (1999, 2011), Gifted and advanced Black Students in School: An Anthology of Critical Works (2011), In Search of the Dream: Designing Schools and Classrooms that Work for High Potential Students from Diverse Cultural Backgrounds (2004), Diverse Learners with Exceptionalities: Culturally Responsive Teaching in the Inclusive Classroom (2008), and Teaching Culturally Diverse Gifted Students(2005).

Going Beyond the Single Narrative: Using Positive Media Images of African Americans to Navigate Professional and Academic Spaces

​Images of African Americans in the media tend to promote a singular narrative from a deficit lens, that is not entirely reflective of our diverse experiences, accomplishments, and contributions. Come to this interactive discussion where current students will share how more recent media portrayals of Africans Americans (Black Panther, Insecure, Blackish,) have promoted more positive images that help us navigate microaggressions in professional and academic spaces. Videos, songs, and other media clips will be shown to moderate an interactive discussion with audience members. No RSVP Required.

Campus Advisor Information Session and Breakfast

The Campus Advisor Info Session & Breakfast is an interactive session with College of Education staff and faculty. Our goal is to work together on finding ways to inspire students to pursue their dreams of becoming teachers, counselors, and other education professionals. College of Education Representatives will answer questions on prerequisites, length of time to achieve credentials and degrees in education, and the job outlook in education, as well as provide information on where to refer students for help. RSVP is Required - By Invitation Only.

Information Session: MA in Education, Curriculum & Instruction with Linked Learning Emphasis

This degree program addresses the needs of teachers, in school districts wanting to expand Linked Learning pathways, and current and future teachers seeking a deeper understanding of college and career pathways in secondary schools. Art in the Classroom

“Arts integration” is an educational approach that incorporates the arts into other areas of study. The approach has been proven to increase performance in other academic areas if the connections are based on mutual concepts. Vicarious Trauma in Children and Educators; Managing the Impact of School Violence

Due to the recent tragedies in the schools, this presentation was created in order to provide an overview of what trauma and vicarious trauma is and how it impacts students and educator’s everyday life as well as the long-term effects. It provides examples of possible warning signs seen in students as well as educators and resources on how to cope with these symptoms. No RSVP required.

UDCP Meet & Greet

Come learn about the Urban Dual Credential Program (UDCP) and meet current candidates to ask questions. The UDCP program allows candidates to complete their Multiple Subject Credential Program and Education Specialist Credential Program concurrently in a clinical setting. The UDCP program is a 2 year program where candidates are doing clinical practice (fieldwork) their first year and then student teaching during the second year while completing the required coursework for the program. No RSVP required.

 

Ed.D in Educational Leadership Information Session

Meet Your Future Employer: A Session with Select Job Fair Employers for College of Education Candidates

On the evening before the Educator’s Job Fair, there will be informal time for networking with a few employers and a panel discussion about what students can do now to make themselves more marketable to employers. This event is a good fit for master’s-level students and teaching credential candidates in the College of Education representing subject areas such as School Counseling, School Psychology, Administration, Special Education and K-12 teaching.
