Dual Language Development Course Descriptions-K-12 emphasis, including adult education

EDCI 532 Socialization of Literacy in More Than One Language: This course examines dual language development and the family and community contexts that influence literacy development for first and second language learners.

EDCI 533 Action Research Methods: Teachers as Inquirers (3 units): This course develops skills in data collection and analysis in order to sustain action research as a teacher/researcher in classroom settings.

EDCI 541 Designing Curriculum and Instruction in Primary and Second Language Settings (3 units): This course builds competence in curriculum development with an emphasis on primary and second language teaching, learning, and critical literacy, and analyzes a variety of program sites.

EDRG 551B Literacy Assessment for Bilingual Students (3 units): This course examines and evaluates measures, strategies, and materials used in the assessment of literacy development of bilingual students, and critically examines the theoretical underpinnings of current assessment practices.

EDCI 695 Seminar in Curriculum and Instruction (3 units): This seminar guides students through the completion of an individual action research project, related to dual language development curriculum and instruction, that serves as the basis for their comprehensive examination.

EDCI 698 Thesis  (6 units): This course guides students through the completion of a thesis based on research in the area of dual language development.

EDP 400 Introduction to Educational Measurement and Statistics (3 units): This is an introductory course in educational testing and measurement and the statistical concepts that support these methods.

SCAE 564  Language and Educational Policies (3 units): This course examines current and historical language policies and legal decisions in U.S. and comparative international contexts.

LING 650 Seminar in Bilingualism (3 units): This course provides advanced study of degrees and kinds of bilingualism and bilingual students that exist.

Advisor Approved Electives:

Courses included in credential certification (or equivalents) which can be transferred to the Master's program are selected in consultation with DLD Coordinator, Prof. Trini Lewis.

Course that allows for in-depth study of topics introduced in the core and specialization courses (or alternatives chosen in consultation with DLD advisor)
