Working with Radioactive Materials

The California State Department of Public Health, Radiologic Health Branch (RHB) controls the quantities and use of radioactive materials and radiation producing machines in this State. They have issued a license to this campus which grants the California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) the authority to possess radioisotopes and issue specific radioisotope-use permits to faculty and staff. This a campus wide committee. The president has delegated administrative authority for the Radiation Safety program to the Dean, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. A campus Radiation Safety Officer and Alternate Radiation Safety Officer facilitate the day-to-day radiation safety functions.

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU MAY NOT HANDLE OR OBTAIN ANY RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS (excluding legally exempt materials) until you have first completed the Campus Radiation Safety Program Training and passed the Radiation Safety Test. Radiation Safety Program Training is usually offered the first Friday of every month. Contact the Campus Radiation Safety Officers (RSO) to sign up for this training.

EVEN AFTER YOU HAVE COMPLETED YOUR TRAINING, YOU MAY NOT OBTAIN ANY RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS (OR EQUIPMENT THAT PRODUCES IONIZING RADIATION) WITHOUT FIRST CONTACTING THE CAMPUS RSOs.

Unless you are the Primary Investigator, you will have to take and pass the Radiation Safety Test yearly in order to retain permission to work with radioactive materials.

Working with Radiation Source, Electron Microscope, or X-Ray Device

Electron Microscopes, X-Ray machines, equipment containing radioactive sources such as Gas Chromatographs with Electron Capture Detectors etc. are regulated by the State of California. Prior approval from CSULB Radiation Safety is required BEFORE acquisition (via purchase, donation etc.) Radiation Safety will work with you to register the device, develop a safe-use program and take initial radiation safety measurements. They will also provide training and ongoing safety oversight. PLEASE CONTACT RADIATION SAFETY BEFORE ACQUISITION.
