B. Heuristic and guideline evaluation

Products are evaluated against heuristics and domain specific guidelines

  • E.g., heuristic: Promote consistency and standards
  • E.g., guideline: Place the site name and logo on every page and make the logo a link to the home page (except on the home page itself)

Notes:

  • Heuristics are general rules of thumb (or principles that usually work) developed based on empirical evidence and according to human factors research.
  • This is typically a checklist type of evaluation where usability experts evaluate products against a set of heuristics or domain specific guidelines.
    • Promote Consistency and Standards: Users should not have to wonder whether different words, situations, or actions mean the same thing. Follow platform conventions.
