Current
Research & Evaluation Activities
The Center
for Behavioral Research and Services continued work on recent projects
funded in prior years. Activities included the completion of the National
Institute on Drug Abuse-funded projects entitled “HIV Reduction for Drug-Using
MSMs,” scheduled to end May, 2001; and “Theory-Based HIV Sexual Risk Reduction
for Drug Users,” scheduled to end August 2001. “Interventions to Reduce
HBV, BCV and HIV Among IDUs” continues for another year; the evaluation
for the National Library of Medicine Project entitled “Telemedicine Testbed
Project” is scheduled to end October 2001, and the University wide AIDS
Research Program (UARP) Center pilot projects will be ongoing for at least
another year.
Current
Service Activities
HIV / AIDS
Mobile Testing
CBRS operates
a mobile unit that brings HIV testing and counseling services to drug
users both in and out of treatment. This mobile program has been operating
and receiving funding from L.A. County since 1993. It routinely provides
services to drug treatment programs within the south bay areas of Los
Angeles County and neighborhoods with a high prevalence of drug abuse.
A study using data from this program is currently “in press” at the Journal
of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes that looks at HIV serostatus
as a function of drug treatment setting (Klahn, Fisher & Wood). This
program received funding for an additional year from the County of Los
Angeles, and also received funding for a Hepatitis C demonstration project.
Food Bank
and Counseling Program
CBRS maintains
a Food Bank on the premises for indigent drug-using individuals who also
participate in HIV / AIDS prevention activities. Health educators conduct
personalized risk reduction counseling and group counseling services,
and clients are given referrals to medical and social services. The program
is funded through June 2003.
Ready
for Action
Los Angeles
County funded this HIV prevention program from 1995 to 2003. The program
targets gay and bisexual men in Long Beach and consists of community outreach,
education and weekly support groups. The program name, Ready for Action,
was based on the preparation stage of the Trans-Theoretical Model (TTM)
of behavior change. This program is funded through June 2003.
Listo
para Acción
Listo para
Acción, also funded by Los Angeles County, has been in operation at CBRS
since 1997. The Listo program includes community outreach as a means
of recruitment and conducts structured workshops. Workshops are based
on Trans-Theoretical Model principles and are both culturally competent
and linguistically appropriate. This project is funded through 2003.
Proyecto
S.O.L.A.A.R.
As part of
California’s high-risk initiative, CBRS was funded in 2000 by a sub-contract
through the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services to conduct
this HIV prevention program for Spanish-speaking Latino gay and bisexual
men. The S.O.L.A.A.R. (Superación Orgullo y Lucha A través de Amor en
Relaciones) program also is based on the Trans-Theoretical Model. It
is funded through June 2003.
Accomplishments
-
During
the year, Center staff prepared and submitted nearly a dozen abstracts
for presentation at the annual meeting of the American Public Health
Association, to be held in Atlanta in October 2001. Nine abstracts
were accepted for poster presentations and one was accepted for oral
presentation.
-
Staff
presented six posters at the 2000 annual meeting of the American Public
Health Association in Boston. In February 2001, Center staff participated
in the 3rd annual CHIPTS UCLA Next Generation Conference,
with five staff making oral presentations, and one staff member making
a poster presentation.
-
Center
staff will be making oral presentations at the Health Services Disparities
and Addictions Conference to be held in Houston in October 2001.
Currently, four publications are under review at peer-reviewed journals
and another five publications have either been published or are “in
press.”
-
Center staff in professional training presentations
trained over 200 individuals around the state. Center
staffs were also involved in many professional training opportunities
to increase their own expertise in areas that pertain to their jobs.
-
Nine
staff members attended the SAS Users Group International annual meeting,
held for the first time in Long Beach. Ten staff members attended
training on Viking Data Entry software, held on the CSULB campus.
Staff also received training on a variety of other topics, including
SAS Version 8 and SAS Macro Language; DataFlux™ software, and network
security.
