1999-2000
Annual Report
Current Research & Evaluation Activities
The Center for Behavioral Research and Services (CBRS) received two new
grants this year that funded three new research projects, in addition
to its three ongoing research projects.
Five of these studies focused on HIV prevention and one on cigar
smoking. Funding for these multi-year studies came from
the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC), and the University of California.
Current
Service Activities
Service activities this year fell into three categories: community
HIV-prevention programs targeting gay men, gay Latinos, and drug users;
pregnancy prevention among teens; and training and technical assistance
in HIV prevention for local agencies throughout the State.
One new prevention service program proposal was submitted and funded
by Los Angeles County. International
training and community assessment activities were conducted for USAID
in Ukraine and Indonesia.
Accomplishments
During the year, Center staff and faculty had nine articles published
(or under review for publication) in scientific journals.
In addition, nine papers were presented at conferences, including
the American Public Health Association and an invited paper at an international
scientific conference in Jerusalem (Substance Abuse Issues in the Year
2000), and 37 workshops or other professional training presentations were
made. Of major importance was the award the Center
received from the University-wide AIDS Research Program (UARP) of the
University of California. This
grant is providing three years of significant infrastructure support for
CBRS as an Emerging AIDS Research Center.
Student and Faculty Involvement
Three Center employees served in faculty roles at the University during
the year, five faculty members served on the Faculty Advisory Committee
of the Center, and four faculty members heretofore unsupported by the
Center received partial support on the UARP grant.
Ten graduate and undergraduate students from CSULB and three from
UCLA were employed at the Center during the year.
The HIV/AIDS Investigator Development Program, begun with funding
from the UARP grant, is providing research training and opportunities
for four faculty members at CSULB and 11 post-doctoral fellows or junior
faculty at UCLA and Drew University.
Other
During the year 14 contracts and grants supported the
Center’s activities with funding at $2,915,221.
The demographics of the 47 staff members are 57% male and 43% female.
African-Americans comprise 28% of employees, Asian/Pacific Islanders
6%, Latinos/Hispanics 30%, and Whites, 36%.
Because
the Director of the Center announced his retirement effective the end
of the Spring 2000 semester, a search was undertaken for a senior-level
faculty member to serve as Director of the Center.
Dr. Dennis Fisher was recruited and accepted the position, beginning
in the Fall 2000 semester. Dr.
Rhodes will continue half time completing the research grants on which
he is Principal Investigator. Dr.
Corby resigned as Associate Director of the Center but will remain as
P.I. and co-P.I. of her projects until they are completed at the end of
2001.
