INTENSIVE WORKSHOP (SHORT VERSION)

Workshop Title: HS Test Taking Techniques Workshop - S

Introductions (2 minutes)

  • This may be your third visit with this classroom. Give your name again and remind the students what Cal-SOAP is about. (Please be brief.)
  • Topic: Explain that you’re going to talk about note & test taking strategies and learning styles.

Ice Breaker (6 minutes)

  • Directions – Think about three unique statements about yourself—two which are true and one which is false. It is up to your fellow classmates to see how convincing you are and how much they know about you by guessing which one of your statements is false. I will go first by giving you three statements about myself… (Each CPA/AC must participate in the ice breaker.)

Let’s Get Intensive (5 minutes)

  • Break down into groups. There should be one group per Cal-SOAP staff member.
  • Pass around WORKSHOP SIGN-IN SHEETS (one per group).
  • If this is your first visit with this group of students, make sure to give each one a STUDENT QUESTIONNAIRE.

Study Skills: Part III (17 minutes)

*Student participation is important. Ask students to volunteer by reading sections or compare their note-taking strategies with the ones in the handout.

  • Pass out Note-Taking & Test-Taking handouts.
  •  “Simple-Note Taking Skills”– The simpler your notes, the faster you will be able to take notes. Make sure that you have a consistent note taking system so that it will be easier to read and write your notes.
  • SAVE THE ACTIVITY FOR THE END OF THE WORKSHOP.
  •  “Tips for Test Taking” – It’s important to remain relaxed and prepared for a test.
  • Learning Styles” – Knowing your learning style should help you study better for tests.

Activity (If time permits)

  • If short on time, complete this activity as a group.
  • Make it clear to the students that these are only suggestions and that they should create their own system for taking notes.
  • Activity Answers:
    • Part I
      • Before you buy, you should know that one dog is bigger than the other two dogs.
      • Mano (means/equals/is) hand in English.
      • I talk on the phone no more than five times a day.
      • If found the class without knowing the room number.
      • Did you see the man with the blue coat because I can’t leave without him?
    • Part II
      • He earns < $ than she.
      • 10 – 5 = 5.
      • W/her mom’s help, she cleans her room 2x/week.
