Introduction to Community College Workshop Agendas

 

INTENSIVE WORKSHOP (SHORT VERSION)

Workshop Title: Introduction to Community College- S

Introductions (10 minutes)

  • Give name, school, and position with Cal-SOAP, and then give a description of Cal-SOAP.
  • Topic: Explain that you’re going to give an overview of community colleges.
  • Ice Breaker – Ask the following question: What is your dream car? Spend a few minutes asking this question to loosen the group up. The CPA/AC should also participate.

Let’s Get Intensive (5 minutes)

  • Break down into groups. There should be one group per Cal-SOAP staff member.
  • Pass around WORKSHOP SIGN-IN SHEETS (one per group).
  • As the Workshop Sign-In Sheets is going around, give students who were absent from the previous workshop a STUDENT QUESTIONNAIRE to quickly complete.

Introduction to Community Colleges (15 minutes)

*Student participation is important. Ask students to volunteer by reading sections or provide any information that they already know about the subject.

  • Pass out Introduction to Community College handouts.
  •  “Levels of Study” – Ask students about their educational goals post high school. Point out which level of study matches their plans.
  •  “Requirements for Attending a Community College”
  • “Steps to Choosing a Community College” – Students should consider these steps if they are having difficulty finding a school to fit their goals. This section may appeal most to students who specific goals in mind.
  • “Steps to Success” – Help students get in and get started with this section.

Activity (If time permits)

  • Pick one of the paired words/phrases. Attempt to connect them by using other words as a link. (Hint: The links are like steps.) There should be a minimum of three words (links) between the original words/phrases. Encourage students to use the information they learned from the handout.
  • Example – The pair is college counselor /BOG Fee Waiver. College counselor, application, admittance, registration, tuition, BOG Fee Waiver.
