Use of university name by outside organizations

California Education Code Section 89005.5(a)(1)(B) provides that the names of all CSU institutions are property of the State of California. Education Code Section 89005.5(a)(2)(B) states that no person shall use any CSU name, or any abbreviation of any CSU name, to imply, indicate or otherwise suggest that any product, service, or organization is connected or affiliated with, or is endorsed, favored or supported by the Trustees of the California State University. This section further provides that "The permission of the Trustees is required before any [CSU name] may be used for any commercial purpose." Subpart (c) of Section 89005.5 states that any person who uses a CSU name in violation of California law is also guilty of a misdemeanor.

Nonprofit organizations and public agencies collaborating with the University may use the University’s name, marks, and/or images either per the terms of a written agreement or upon request through written permission. Requests may be sent to CSULB’s Strategic Communications office, which will coordinate review. Once permission is granted, use of University marks must comply with established guidelines.

Entities interested in using the University name or an institutional mark on commercial products may explore licensing opportunities with the institutionally-affiliated '49er Shops at the Beach, which manages trademarked CSULB images on behalf of and under agreement with the University. The auxiliary will not enter into a licensing agreement that implies that any product, service, or organization or is endorsed, favored or supported by the University. If a licensing agreement is reached with the '49er Shops, use of University marks must comply with established guidelines.

Entities interested in featuring the University name or a University mark in a news release or case study, or in using an image from the University, may seek written permission. If the request includes use of a mark or image, a written agreement to be initially drafted by the requestor should specify what mark or image will be used, in what medium, for how long, and for what purpose. Requests may be sent to the CSULB’s Strategic Communications office, which will coordinate review and potentially return an amended use agreement for signature. The University will not authorize use of its name, marks, or images in a way that implies that any product, service, or organization or is endorsed, favored or supported by the University. It is likely that review of a publication proof or test web page will be required prior to final authorization being given. Once permission is granted, use of University marks must comply with established guidelines.
