Scholarship Opportunities:
A variety of scholarships exist for students in Biological Sciences at CSULB. These scholarships are divided between annual department awards in various disciplines and awards from private foundations.
Application forms are normally available mid-February. Unless otherwise indicated, application forms are available in the Department of Biological Sciences, PH1-109, (562) 985-4806. Deadlines vary each year. Most deadlines are approximately late April.
If you are not a Biological Sciences major, please contact your major department for other available scholarships.
Annual Departmental Awards:
The Harkison Raj Award:
The qualifying student must meet the following criteria:
1. must be pursuing either a M.S. in Microbiology, or a B.S. in Microbiology (junior or senior)
2. must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
3. must be doing research in the area of microbial physiology, biochemistry, or metabolism
4. graduate students must have presented their research at a local, national or international meeting where abstracts are screened and refereed, or must have a thesis accepted by their thesis committee
5. undergraduate students must have presented their research at a local, national or international meeting where abstracts are screened and refereed.
Amount of scholarship variable.
The Richard B. Loomis Research Award:
Applicants must be pursuing the M.S. Degree in Biology, or M.S. Degree in Microbiology, at CSULB, and must be Advanced to Candidacy (or eligible for Advancement).

Linda Warren Graham / *CACLS Award:
Scholarship awarded annually to a graduating senior in Microbiology who has been accepted by a Medical Technology training program recognized by the California Department of Health.
*California Association of Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CACLS) ($500-$1000)
Frank Schatzlein Scholarship Award:
1. undergraduate students with upper division standing (juniors or seniors)
2. a major in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in cellular physiology
3. GPA of 3.25 or higher
4. letter of recommendation from a faculty member in Biological Sciences, CSULB

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship:
The qualifying student must meet the following criteria:
1. sophomore or junior pursuing a B.S. on a full-time basis
2. must have overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
3. interest in pursuing a Ph.D. in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering
4. prior research experience preferred
5. must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or Resident Alien
Scholarship $7500/academic year. Application Deadline is in November.

Target Specialty Products Scholarship:
The Target Specialty Products Scholarship is designed to reward a hardworking, well-rounded undergraduate student majoring in Natural Sciences or Mathematics, with sophomore, junior or senior class standing. Students applying for this scholarship should be involved in school and community activities, be working either full or part-time, and must be interested in exploring future careers that combine science and business. Application forms and information are available in the Department of Biological Sciences Office beginning the month of February. Students applying for the Target Scholarship should be:
1) involved in school and community activities and be working either full or part-time,
2) an undergraduate student majoring in Natural Sciences or Mathematics,
3) interested in exploring future careers that combine science and business.
Other Scholarship Requirements:
4) U.S. Citizenship
5) Letter of Recommendation from Faculty Member
6) Essay on how the scholarship will help you achieve your career goals (75-100 words)
7) Sophomore, Junior or Senior class standing
