Hulus, instruments made from gourds and bamboo, took center stage Monday as the fifth Chinese Cultural Festival got underway.

Monday’s multi-performance event gave students a glimpse of what they can expect during the weeklong festival, which will include a tai chi tea ceremony and classes, paintings by Chen Xiaoqi, Ma Mingren plaster, paper cutting, snuff bottles with paintings inside and Yangliuqing folk painting.

The free festival, which focuses on Chinese art and music, runs all week and concludes with Friday’s Closing. Ceremonies The festival aims to improve understanding between China and the United States through a variety of cultural and artistic exchanges.
