My name is Yolanda Griggs and this is mybeach Experience:
My Liberal Arts education has helped me to critically analyze what is important to me and what is important in the world. It has further developed my capacity to have empathy for others, to respect others’ opinions, and to have a deeper appreciation for ethical values and behavior. It is about giving the knowledge that I have learned an intrinsic value. Engaging with other students and professors in group lectures and discussions was one of my greatest experiences. It allowed me to understand other students’ views about some of the cultural and social issues we all face today, which influenced certain aspects of my views. “The essence of a liberal education is to develop the freedom to think critically and independently, to cultivate one’s mind to its fullest potential, to liberate oneself from prejudice, superstition, and dogma” (Roche, 2010) . I am very grateful to have experienced this education--I only wish that I had experienced it sooner in my life.
After experiencing a very tragic event in my family that contributed to a 10-year hiatus from school, I chose to continue my education here at CSULB, where I have recently earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts through the College of Continuing and Professional Education. I heard a radio advertisement about the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts (BALA) degree completion program at CSULB. I was so impressed with the fact that I could obtain my degree in a specified amount of time, still be able to work, and take care of my family. I thought to myself, "This is exactly what I need!" I decided to attend the workshop to learn more about the BALA program. The program is designed to serve the needs of working professionals who are re-entering education. It also provides opportunities for networking and assists students in acquiring skills and knowledge in communication, critical thinking, language and literature, analytical and scientific reasoning, quantitative analysis, and philosophical foundations.
My recent educational experience has released seeds of passion and devotion in me, and has inspired me to pursue an MBA degree. I have already applied to the MBA program here at CSULB and am currently studying for the Graduate Record Exam with great hopes of entering in Fall 2014.
