Name: Laura Garcia
Hometown: Marikina, Philippines
My name is Llaura Garcia and this is my Beach Experience…
My Beach Experience is about getting involved and doing as much as I can during my time at the Beach. I started out as a student who only wanted to go to class on campus. As time passed on, I realized that participating in various organizations is as valuable as getting good grades in the classroom. My time and experiences in the university has defined what I’d like to do in the future for a career in public service and non-profit management.
The choice to go the CSULB was a simple and easy decision. I wanted to be near my family and go to a university where I will get a quality education that will prepare me to enter into the workforce and attend graduate school.
Aside from taking classes and working at the University, getting involved through various organizations and ASI completed my Beach experience. My wonderful professors taught me what I needed to learn in the field that I would like to get into and getting involved with ASI became one of the best decisions that I’ve made. I did not only learn more about the University but I was able assist ASI in doing what we can for the student population. Aside from getting involved on campus, I’m excited to have been part of the California State Student Association (CSSA) which is the organization that assists the CSU students in a system-wide level. Being a part of ASI and CSSA has given me a chance to serve my peers, gain lifelong friends, learn valuable lessons, and gather valuable experiences that will help me in the future. My experiences at CSULB has solidified my interested in public service and working for a non-profit or non-governmental organization. My time at CSULB has been a rollercoaster ride and I loved every minute of it. Throughout my time as a student, my fondest memories would have to be working and getting to know the people in ASI and CSSA. They are amazing and seeing them always brings a smile to my face. I’m humbled to have been able to work with such an amazing group of student leaders.
I have loved my time at the Beach, but I am extremely excited to move on to the next stage of my life. CSULB has provided me with various opportunities throughout the years and has prepared me thoroughly for whatever comes in the future. With the busy schedule that I had throughout my years at CSULB, graduating will allow for more free time that I could spend traveling more with family and friends. After graduation, I plan on going to graduate school for Non-Profit Management and work for a non-profit or non-governmental organization. CSULB has been my second home for the past couple of years and I will forever miss my classes, professors, acquaintances, and friends that I’ve gained.
Cal State Long Beach sets a standard of excellence throughout all areas in the university. Through my interaction with faculty, staff, and administrators; my involvement with Associated Students Inc. Student Government and multiple university-wide councils and committees, it is evident that the campus community is here for the growth and success of the student body. As a double major in Political Science and Recreation and Leisure Studies, the professional, academic, and personal support for me and my fellow students have been incredible. I couldn't have picked a more diverse University with a campus community that offers a multitude amount of support and opportunities for its students' success. I will surely miss my time as an undergrad at Cal State Long Beach when I become a proud alumnus of CSULB with the Class of 2011. With all of the opportunities and everyone that I've met at The Beach, I will always do what I can to stay involved and support The Beach community.
