Before transferring to Long Beach State, I served in the Navy during the Korean War, and I played in the '55 Pan American Games and the '56 Australian Olympic Games. So when I went to school I was an older, married college student. So I didn't really hang out or have time to join college activities; I participated and focused on water polo and my studies only. I did attend the 49er Days of course. I attempted to win the Black Bart Beard Contest but fraternity boys beat me.
My fondest memories were playing and coaching water polo for Long Beach State and helping LBSC win their first state championship, in any sport. I was honored to be named Athlete of the Year at Long Beach State for 1959.
Right after graduating I played in the 1960 Rome Olympic Games. Then I became a teacher/coach for two years at Cerritos J.C. before going to UCLA for 28 years. I served as water polo coach from 1963-1991, and swimming coach from 1963-1974. I had a great time at UCLA tutoring student athletes including many All-Americans and Olympians. Our teams won three NCAA Titles and 13 league titles. I also served on the coaching staff for the '68 Mexico City and '72 Munich Olympic Games during my tenure.

My experience helped me reach my goals of being a teacher and coach, working with young college students. It has been very gratifying.
