Background:
Lisa Mendoza is a Beach Parent Volunteer with the Alumni Association. She lives in Long Beach with husband Sergio and their two sons, Sergio Lewis and Austin Nicholas. She’s been happily married for 21 years to Sergio, who is also a Beach Parent Volunteer. Lisa attended CSULB for one semester as a math major and her dream is to one day return and get her bachelor’s degree. She worked at McDonnell Douglas, but her passion is being home with her family and volunteering.
Q: Why did you become a volunteer of the Alumni Association?
I want to be a part of the Beach Family. I’m very proud of my son for being a CSULB student. Helping out at the Alumni Association helps me stay in the loop with the different events and activities that take place on campus. I first volunteered for Homecoming, and since then, I have volunteered regularly at most of their events.
Q: When you are not volunteering, what are some of your hobbies?
I love to read, and I enjoy helping out at Tincher Preparatory, my younger son’s school. I also like going to the Student Recreation and Wellness Center to work out. I enjoy spending time with my family, and we go on field trips as often as possible.
Q: What advice would you give to other alumni or parents who would like to become more involved with CSULB?
They need to sign up to volunteer for the Alumni Association. You meet great people, and you connect with fellow alumni. It is so much fun, and they take good care of you. Not to mention it helps you stay up to date on everything that is going on around campus. The CSULB Alumni Association has a variety of events, and there is always something for every volunteer. I encourage everybody to try to volunteer at their events!
Q: What are some of your favorite events that you enjoy volunteering for?
I really liked Homecoming; I came in the week before to help with event prep work and got to know everything that goes on behind an event such as this. My husband and I volunteered the day of Homecoming and really enjoyed seeing how people enjoyed coming back to campus and the Homecoming festivities. I have also enjoyed volunteering at the Rose Parade float, the LB Dirtbags games, Commencement making flower arrangements and during the Concerts in the Grove.
