Beach Connection Fall 2011

BEACH PRIDE ON THE ROAD

CSULB is proud to have over 250,000 alumni living and working across the country and the world. Thirty-eight thousand alumni live outside California, with 49ers living in each U.S. state and territory. Visit our newly launched regional alumni Web page to learn how many alumni live in your state. Then join us on Facebook and LinkedIn to tap into your regional network for reminiscing, reconnecting and professional networking. Our goal is to keep you connected no matter how close or far away you live from The Beach. We recently surveyed alumni across the nation to learn what life events led them to where they are today, how long they have been away from Long Beach and how they show their Beach Pride.

My fiance, Kurtis ('05 Alum) got a job working in San Francisco in 2009.  We relocated and now live in Marin County, just outside of the city.
How long have you lived out of the Long Beach area and have you been back to campus since you left?  If so, why did you visit campus?
We have lived in the Bay Area since 2009.  We have not been back to campus :(
If you could give one piece of advice to students nearing graduation who might move out of California, what would your advice be?
Bring warm clothes if you are moving to the Bay Area :)  The best advice I can give is to take advantage of whatever opportunities come your way.  That may mean moving to a new city or out of state but in the long run it can open so many doors and allow you to experience new things.  Don't let an opportunity pass you by!

What life events led you to the where you live today?
I moved from Southern California to Atlanta, Georgia in 2001 due to my husband's promotion with a national bank. Eight years later we moved to South Florida when I accepted the CEO position with JetStream Federal Credit Union where I have served for just over two years. JetStream Federal Credit Union is a Miami Lakes based credit union serving members in Miami Dade County and Puerto Rico. Prior to JetStream I was the CEO of Retail Employees Credit Union, an Atlanta based credit union that served Macy’s employees in Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina. Upon moving to Atlanta I re-entered the credit union movement by accepting a position as Vice President of Operations at Credit Union of Atlanta. I am a Southern California native who began my career in banking, made the switch to credit unions and served as Vice President at San Diego County Credit Union before moving east. I have twenty five years of financial management experience in institutions large and small and have held senior management positions on both coasts. I have been active in the credit union movement holding a variety of board and committee positions including my recent election to the NAFCU Board as Region III Director. I am also currently serving on the Southeast Corporate Supervisory Committee. While In Georgia, I served on the Georgia Credit Union League Board, as Vice Chairman of the Georgia Credit Union Foundation, and Chairman of the Georgia CUPAC Board. I am an experienced public speaker, a past presenter at statewide conferences and frequently represent credit union causes in Washington, DC. In 2009, I was honored to receive the Moses C. Davis Award for Professional of the Year. As a financial literacy facilitator since 1992, I embrace the important role that credit unions play in the financial success of our members. JetStream FCU is a low income designated credit union with 75% of our members in South Florida and Puerto Rico residing in low income zip codes. We are dedicated to our member’s prosperity and truly committed to identifying and serving the needs of this diverse, multi-ethnic population. Our goal is simple - improve our members’ overall financial condition, options, and knowledge.

If you could give one piece of advice to students nearing graduation who might move out of California, what would your advice be?
Risks go hand in hand with opportunities. If you are not open to taking risks then you will surely limit your career opportunities.

What life events led you to the where you live today?
From the time I went to Space Camp as a kid, I knew I wanted to be an aerospace engineer.  I put in the work and made all the right moves, so it was only a matter of time before I found the right job.  The key event that has me in DC today was a job fair in Long Beach during my senior year.  I was pretty discouraged by the job market at the time and almost didn't go to this one.  Glad I did though.
How long have you lived out of the Long Beach area and have you been back to campus since you left?  If so, why did you visit campus?
I've been in DC for almost a year now and I've been back to campus a couple times to visit friends.
If you could give one piece of advice to students nearing graduation who might move out of California, what would your advice be?
I would tell students that moving out of California is no different from when they first started at CSULB.  It's just an exercise in adapting to new surroundings, which you've already demonstrated you can manage.
How do you stay informed and connected to The Beach from where you are today?
I get my Beach updates from my friends still living in the area and by reading the Beach Connection and President's Scholar Newsletters whenever they show up in my mailbox.
How do you show your Beach Pride where you live?
I love it when people ask me where I went to school.  In my office I've got the same cartoon map of Long Beach I had hanging up in my Parkside Commons dorm.  My truck still has the same LB decal I put on the back windshield freshman year.  And who doesn't represent their school in some way or another when they're at the gym?
If you stay in touch with fellow 49'ers in your area, who are they and how do you stay connected?
Haven't met any Beach contacts since I've been out here.  I missed the last alumni mixer in DC due to work.  I'm hoping I can make the next one.
Have you networked regionally with alums via Facebook and LinkedIn?  If yes, please share your experience?
Expanding my network of coworkers has been the priority so far, but perhaps it's about time I give the alumni network a try.
Do you have venue suggestions in your area for an alumni gathering
There's plenty of things to do in the DC area.  They've got quite a few rooftop bars out here, which I think are really cool (not many of those out in California).  I also went to a fun zip-line park in Maryland.  And there's a few outdoor ice rinks during the winter--I wonder if they do broomball??
Would you be interested in assisting with an alumni gathering in your area?
Sure thing.

What life events led you to the where you live today?
To be completely honest, CSULB is 100% responsible for where I live today. I attribute my experience in the graduate program at Long Beach, and in particular the interactions with the wonderful and supportive faculty with making me believe I could gain admission to the #1 program in my field (currently pursing PhD at the University of Michigan).
How long have you lived out of the Long Beach area and have you been back to campus since you left? If so, why did you visit campus?
I left Long Beach August of 2008. I went back during my first Christmas vacation to see faculty and old coworkers on campus. I also flew back for graduation in 2009 and 2010.
If you could give one piece of advice to students nearing graduation who might move out of California, what would your advice be?
Two pieces of advice: (1) is to consider seriously the prospect of moving out of California. It will broaden your perspective on many facets of life. Moreover, for those interested in graduate schools, so many of the universities in the Midwest and on the East coast provide funding far superior to what is offered in California. and (2) you can ALWAYS move back home...if your circumstances, allow for it, take this opportunity to explore.
How do you stay informed and connected to The Beach from where you are today?
Umm Facebook, LinkedIN, the alum association emails, and through my grad program's listsevrs.
How do you show your Beach Pride where you live?
I absolutely loved my experience at CSULB, so even though I attend a university with a hugely popular football team and with lots of school spirit, I wear my Beach gear frequently (mostly at the gym like I will today).
If you stay in touch with fellow 49'ers in your area, who are they and how do you stay connected?
Don't know any 49'ers in my area.
Have you networked regionally with alums via Facebook and LinkedIn? If yes, please share your experience.
Nope, not here in Ann Arbor.
Do you have venue suggestions in your area for an alumni gathering?
Buffalo Wild Wings? I also alum of UCSB and there is a small group here who gathers there for sporting events.
