Position: Assistant Professor of American Politics

Effective Date: August 17, 2020 (Fall Semester)

Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Political Science or Ph.D. in appropriate related discipline, with specialization in American Politics.
  • Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2020.
  • Record of, or demonstrated potential for, effective teaching.
  • Record of, or demonstrated potential for, successful research and publication.
  • Experience with, or demonstrated potential for, effective participation in faculty governance.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of training in one or more of the following specializations in American politics: political behavior, political institutions, campaigns/elections, public opinion, social movements, state and local politics, or interest groups.
  • Ability to connect specific areas of interest with broader questions within political science, such as the impact and intersectional dimensions of economic, racial, ethnic, and gender inequality in American politics and democratic governance.
  • Evidence of ability to effectively teach one or more current University course offerings in American politics at the undergraduate and graduate levels (e.g., Introduction to American Government; Racial and Ethnic Politics—U.S.; Urban Politics; The Media and American Politics; How Democratic is the U.S.?; Public Opinion and Political Behavior; Public Policy; Parties, Campaigns, and Elections; California Government in Comparative Perspective; Scope and Methods of Political Science; The United States Congress; The American Presidency; Senior Seminar in Law, Politics, and Policy; and Graduate Seminars in Research Methods in Political Science, American Political Institutions, American Political Behavior, and Policy and Politics).
  • Evidence of ability to develop new course offerings in American politics that engage issues of diversity, particularly as related to race and ethnicity.
  • Evidence of support for and/or experience related to the University’s strong commitment to the academic success of its diverse student body.
  • Evidence of ability to engage in research leading to conference participation and publication.
  • Evidence of interest in and/or experience with department, college, university and community service.

Duties:

  • Teach and develop courses in American politics at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Advise and mentor students, including the supervision of Master’s students taking comprehensive exams and theses.
  • Engage in research leading to conference participation and publications.
  • Participate in faculty governance.
  • Participate in service to the department, college, university, and community.
