Amber Scardina

SI Leader for Johnson, A [ M, W, F 9-10 pm ]
Amber's course is M, W 2 - 3:15 pm [ Section 47, #11480 ]

My name is Amber Lyn Scardina. I’m from Newbury Park, California and moved to Long Beach to pursue academics. I’m currently a “Super Senior” and am double majoring in Electrical Engineering and Physics. Some of my undergraduate achievements include making Dean's List for fall 2012, 2013, and Spring 2015, in addition to achieving President’s List in fall 2014, 2015, and spring 2016. In the future, I would like to work as an engineer, and have strong interest in space and control systems.

I have been an SI leader for the past 3 semesters. I decided to become an SI leader because it allows me to be creative and interact with other students. My favorite part about being an SI leader is getting to know my students and being able to learn and have fun with them at the same time. Lastly, a fun fact about myself would be that I am obsessed with anything Marvel (comics, movies, characters, etc.)

Julian Lam

SI Leader for Geier, G [ M, W 2 - 3:15 pm ]
Julian's course is M, W 11 am - 12:15 pm [ Section 25, #5361 ]

Hi! My name is Julian Lam. I’m a pre-Business major student. I was born in California and raised in Hong Kong. This semester will be my first semester as an SI Leader. I decided to become an SI Leader after being one of the participants of the program. The SI program was really helpful for me and I hope to help others in their studies too. I am looking forward to assisting students to better understand their course material.

A fun fact about me is that I love superheroes. This year has been awesome for me with all the new movies. I am also very interested in learning different languages. I have developed the skill to speak four different languages and I’d love to learn more!

Robert Crowley

SI Leader for Geier, G [ M, W 2 - 3:15 pm ]
Robert's course is M, W 11 am- 12:15 pm [ Section 26, #7474 ]

My name is Robert Crowley, and I was born in Long Beach, California. I am a junior pursuing a major in Chemistry, with a minor in Math. I graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School with high honors, and received the California State Seal of Biliteracy in German. I also received a number of awards for the shows that I was involved in as a member of the Wilson Drama Program. When I graduate, I hope to be involved in chemical research in a lab of some kind.

This is my third semester as an SI Leader. I decided to become an SI Leader because I love taking subjects that I understand, and helping other students to get a better understanding of them. I like being able to expose students to new ways of working through a problem. I am also a huge fan of Game of Thrones and am eagerly looking forward to the sixth book coming out.

Apitz, J [ Tu, Th 2 - 3 pm ]; and Barbee, L [ M, W 3:30 - 4:20 pm ]
Ka Cin's course is M, W 11 am - 12:15 pm [ Section 56, #11692 ]

My name is Ka Cin, and I am from South Pasadena, California. Three years ago, I was a student of a Supplemental Instruction (SI) class for Business Calculus. I fell in love with the subject and decided to become an SI Leader. Since then, I have been an SI Leader for Business Calculus. In the upcoming semester, I will again SI for Business Calculus, as well as serving as a SI Mentor for the business group. My favorite part about the job was experiencing the thrill of an “aha!” moment alongside my students!

I am a member of the University Honors Program, a graduate of the Leadership Academy and a graduate of the Student Center for Professional Development. I will also be serving as the Senator for the College of Business Administration in the 2016/2017 academic year. In my spare time, I love to sing, read, practice yoga, play the piano, and spend time with families and friends. I have traveled to sixteen countries and plan to further explore the field of finance internationally after graduation.

Lori Joy Patricio

SI Leader for Araeipour, M [ M, W 11 - 12:15 pm ]
Lori's course is M, W 2 - 3:15 pm [ Section 27, #5816 ]

Hello, my name is Lori Joy Patricio and I am from Carson, California. Currently, I’m pursuing my Masters degree in Applied Mathematics at CSULB. I achieved my Bachelors of Science also in Applied Mathematics as well as my Bachelors of Arts in Mathematical Economics and Economic Theory. I am also an active member of the Mathematics and Statistics Student Association as the Volunteer Coordinator of Math Day at the Beach.

Needless to say, I love math and I find the subject fascinating. It physically pains me when I hear someone say that they hate math. So I became an SI leader in hopes to erase those negative thoughts from students. I want to show them that calculus doesn’t need to be a difficult subject and that it’s not just boring equations. The best part of being an SI leader is seeing that spark when students “get it” and math doesn’t seem so scary anymore.

A fun fact about me is that I love the Harry Potter series and I love Universal Studios. So of course, I try to spend as much time as I can in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Christian Santizo

Christian's course is M, W 2 - 3:15 pm [ Section 28, #7475 ]

My name is Christian Santizo, and I am from Gardena, California. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics with an option in Economics and Management. In addition, I am pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Economics with an option in Mathematical Economics and Economic Theory.

I have always had an interest in helping students better understand mathematical concepts. I have been a tutor in the Learning Assistance Center for 3 semesters. While I loved every minute of tutoring, I decided to challenge myself this semester by taking on a new role in assisting my students by becoming an SI leader. I am looking forward to meeting new people and leading a classroom full of engaging and eager students!

Harrison Phan

SI Leader for Johnson, A [ Tu, Th 9:30 - 10:45 pm ]
Harrrison's course is Tu, Th 3:30 - 4:45 pm [ Section 48, #11521 ]

My name is Harrison. I’m currently in the Mechanical Engineering program at CSULB, and plan on graduating this upcoming fall.

I’ve been an SI leader for two years. My favorite part of being an SI Leader is interacting with the students. It’s always a joy to see them take their skill set in a subject to a new level. I love the Simpsons, so I always try to integrate the Simpsons into my SI lesson plans. Outside of SI, my main passion is rocket propulsion. This summer I had the opportunity of working at Marshall Spaceflight Center as a Spacecraft Propulsion Test Intern.

During the academic semester I am involved in the California Launch Vehicle Education Initiative (CALVEIN) working on the propulsion system of our liquid propellant launch vehicles.

SI Master Math Mentor

Julia Murphy

SI Mentor for STEM Leaders
Julia's is in the LAC office Tu, Th 9:30 am- 3:30 am, and Fri 9 am - 1 pm

My name is Julia Rose Murphy. I was born in Mexico, raised in Connecticut, and have settled in southern California. Fall 2016 marks the beginning of my fifth and final year as an undergraduate at CSULB. I have a double major in Applied Math and Mathematical Economics, and a minor in the Theatre Arts.

I became an SI leader upon recommendation from friends in the Math Department. I very much enjoy my job as an SI leader because of how satisfying it is to help students struggling in math. I like being the small push that helps students excel and meet their full academic potential by raising their grade from a B to an A, or ensuring that they understand material, rather than just being able to reproduce steps with meaning.
