California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) was named one of the nation’s “Best Value” public colleges by the Princeton Review, which teamed up with USA Today to present its list of the 150 (75 public and 75 private) “Best Value Colleges for 2013.”
In an article by U.S.News & World Report, CSULB was listed as one of the top five colleges in the nation receiving the most freshman applications out of some 1,800 schools that reported data in the publication’s annual survey.
U.S.News & World Report ranked CSULB the fourth best public regional university in the western United States in its 2013 edition of “America’s Best Colleges Guide.”
CSULB was named to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine’s 2012–13 list of the top “100 Best Values in Public Colleges.” Nearly 600 public four-year colleges and universities were considered for the list, which recognizes institutions that combine outstanding education with economic value.
Opening in 1949 with fewer than 200 students, CSULB has awarded degrees to more than 280,000 alumni.
The prestigious President’s Scholars Program awards high school valedictorians and national scholars full four-year scholarships to CSULB. More than 1,000 President’s Scholars have benefitted from making CSULB their university of choice.
The Princeton Review designated CSULB a “Best in the West” college in its website feature, “2013 Best Colleges: Region by Region.”
In the most recent listing of the “Top 100 Degree Producers” by Diverse Issues in Higher Education, CSULB is ranked ninth in the nation in conferring baccalaureate degrees to minority students.
For the third straight year, CSULB was named to the “Military Friendly Schools” list by G.I. Jobs, a publication of Victory Media, the premier media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life.
The 49ers captured their second consecutive Big West Conference (BWC) Commissioner’s Cup after tallying the best point average during the 2011-12 intercollegiate season. The 49ers recorded a 140.0-point average, the highest average ever achieved by any school in the history of the BWC Cup.
CSULB’s Hall of Science is the largest capital building project in the campus’ 64-year history. It is also the largest and most expensive building project in the California State University system. The $105 million project encompasses nearly 165,000 gross square feet and completes the Natural Sciences Complex.
Confirming its status as one of the most diverse campuses in the nation, CSULB is among the top 10 universities nationally in both the number of master’s degrees and the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanics.
This year, for the first time, CSULB began offering two new doctoral degrees, a doctorate of physical therapy (DPT) and a doctorate of nursing practice (DNP), and university officials involved with the programs believe that each will play a critical role in the state’s future healthcare needs.
Thomas Gufrey, a long-time chemistry lecturer at CSULB, was named one of America’s top undergraduate professors by the Princeton Review in its newest guidebook, “The Best 300 Professors.” Published in partnership with RateMyProfessors.com, the highest-trafficked college professor ratings site in the United States, “The Best 300 Professors” profiles outstanding faculty at 122 colleges.
