An Intensive Workshop Supporting Faculty Research

Participants in this workshop will have:

  • The ability to use NVivo through multiple cycles of coding to advance their analysis
  • The opportunity to apply these skills to their own qualitative data (if available)

Schedule and Details:
Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

9am - 12: Getting Started in NVivo

  • Preparing data
  • Loading data into NVivo
  • Exploring data
  • Setting up nodes and a codebook
  • Assigning codes
  • Viewing reports

Lunch
1pm - 4: Using NVivo for Analysis

  • Attributes & node classifications
  • Advancing the analysis (querying, etc.)
  • Matrix coding

(Participants familiar with data import and basic coding may wish to join the training in the afternoon and bring coded data.)

Please bring research questions, data in PDF, MS Word, or PowerPoint format, and ideas of main points from your theoretical framework and the literature.

Facilitators:

Jonathan O'Brien, Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership, coordinates the Master of Science in Student Development in Higher Education program and teaches qualitative methods in the education doctorate program. He is the department's qualitative consultant, which includes training graduate students to use NVivo software for data analysis and literature reviews.

Don Haviland, Associate Professor of Educational Leadership, teaches in the Educational Leadership doctoral program, as well as the Master of Science in Student Development in Higher Education program. He has conducted qualitative research on faculty professional socialization, the experiences of non-tenure-track faculty, and graduate education reform, among other studies.
