Jireh Deng

Jireh Deng is an undergraduate Honors student studying Applied Math, Economics, and International Studies at Cal State Long Beach. Her passion is working with people and sharing stories. Previously in her freshman and sophomore year, she was a part of the student government sitting on the Associated Student’s Incorporated Board of Directors and subcommittee Lobby Corps.

Through the University Honors Program, Jireh has worked with multiple speakers as the assistant curator to develop the vision and execution of the TEDxCSULB 2020 Conference. She now works with the Daily 49er, Cal State Long Beach’s official student newspaper, as the assistant opinions editor.

Her poetry can be found in the Poetry Foundation's podcast "VS", in YouthSpeaks' book "Unified Anthology" as well as Level Ground's film and poetry collaboration "Blooming in the Whirlwind". She is currently working on her first written screenplay with Get Lit's Poetic Screenwriter's Lab and is a Spoken Literature Art Movement Cycle V graduate. Most recently in the summer of 2020, she participated in George Abraham's six-week poetry workshop with Kundiman.

Alongside her extracurriculars, she maintains a strong interest in developmental economics and international affairs. Eventually, she wants to achieve a doctoral degree in economics while pursuing her passion for writing on the side. Her goal as a student representative on the Board is the amplify the student voices and experiences at Cal State Long Beach in the process of increasing philanthropic support for the institution.
