1998, 10 August: To learn more about Zuni Pueblo culture, about which I was writing poems at the Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, New Mexico, and to view actual Zuni fetishes (as opposed to those carved as art to be sold), I interviewed Edmund J. Ladd, Zuni anthropologist at the Museum of New Mexico Laboratory of Anthropology in Santa Fe. He kindly showed me Zuni fetishes in the vaults of the Laboratory, as well as the manuscript of a book on Zuni history and culture that he was working on.  See my book, The Alchemy of Opposites.

Travel: 1972, 1983-84, 1986, and 1987: Research for poems (Blood & Bones) in Germany, Holland, Belgium, France, Italy, Switzerland, and England; and (1992) research for new poems, travel in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Holland, and France; (1993) Costa Rica; (1995) British Columbia, Canada; (1997) Jalisco, Mexico, and New Mexico; and (1999) research for poems in France, Andorra, and Spain and particularly in Niaux, France, for prehistoric images of animals in cave paintings, research both for poems and for a critical paper on animal images in art and poetry.  The poems written about my travels since 1992 are in my book, The Alchemy of Opposites (Chiron Review Press, 2000).  In June of 2000 I visited new sites in the Southwest (including the Hopi Pueblo and Canyon de Chelly); in July-August 2000 I visited Florida for the first time; in November 2001 I visited Trinidad, Arcata, and Eureka, California, for the first time.  All these trips inspired new poems.  In August 2003 I visited San Francisco for the first time in eighteen years to research a new autobiographical novel.  In April 2004 I visited Plymouth and Cape Cod, MA, to research a historical novel on based on the Mayflower, Plymouth, and the Wampanoag Indians.  In March 2005 I visited some of the barrier islands of South Carolina and Georgia for further research on the historical novel.  In 2006, to do research for my writing and teaching, I visited England, the Czech Republic (Prague), Germany (Berlin), and the south of France, particularly the Cave of Pech-Merle (Lot).
