Bob Cole Conservatory of Music | California State University, Long Beach | College of the Arts

Welcome to String Studies at California State University, Long Beach.

The String Studies program has one of the strongest faculties in Southern California which includes members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Pacific Symphony. Our instructors have experience teaching students at all levels including young gifted performers. Strategically located among significant music performance venues in the Southern California music culture, the Cole Conservatory prepares string players for job auditions, graduate school programs, or for study abroad. Our Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, Collegium Musicum, String Chamber Music group, as well as the New Music Ensemble are open for participation to qualifying string students. Weekly masterclasses directed by our faculty and renowned guest clinicians provide opportunities to learn advanced techniques and play in front of a peer audience.

The Music Guild provides our students with free chamber music masterclasses as well as guest appearances by outstanding string quartets such as the Rosetti, Avalon, and Borromeo quartets.

Highlights of our program include:

  • Masterclasses with international artists such as Midori and LA Philharmonic’s concert master Martin Chalifour
  • Collaborations with CSULB faculty artists and performance groups, guest composers, local ballet companies, and regional vocal ensembles
  • CSULB students regularly accepted into prestigious summer programs such as Aspen and Tanglewood
  • A faculty consisting of nationally renowned chamber and orchestral musicians and prominent music historians who all represent a wide and varied repertoire
