by Julie C. Van Camp

ABSTRACT

This paper reviews the many legal issues addressed in the lengthy court battles over the ownership of Martha Graham’s choreography, name, and other assets.  Unquestionably, the Graham dispute is a wake-up call to the dance community to take seriously the impact of the law on their artistic endeavors. The significance of the legal decisions for choreographers, dancers, and dance companies in the future are assessed. The ethical issues for the dance community emerging from these legal  developments also are reviewed.
