[How to Get Your Computer Account] [Working in the Campus Labs]

[Library Computer Labs] [ACS Labs] [Working at Home]

To obtain your CSULB computer account:
  • Go to LA5-371 and bring your student ID. This office is open Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m., Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., and Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • You will have time after class the first day of the semester to go to LA5-371 and get your CSULB account.
  • Even if you use a commercial Internet Provider, you still might want to get a CSULB account. In addition to e-mail, you can use the CSULB account for your own Web pages for the Internet (up to 5 MB for registered students).

When you work in the campus computer labs:
  • Always bring your Student ID for admittance to the labs.
  • Bring a 3-1/2" floppy disk with you to the campus computer lab so you can save messages and other materials you find on-line.
  • Take your copy of Internet Access Tools with you to the labs. It is available at the University bookstore for under $5. You can also download the complete text on-line for free: http://www.csulb.edu/~acsdoc/document/index3.html
  • Lab attendants are on duty at all times. Don't hesitate to ask them for help with class computer work. That's what they're being paid to do.
  • You can print on laser printers in most of the student labs on campus for a nominal charge. You should purchase a campus Beach Club Account to pay for printing at the computer labs. Beach Club Accounts can be opened for a minimum of $10.00 at the CSULB 49er Bookstore.

Library Computer Labs

The Labs are open the same hours as the Library itself.
Main Library

The computer labs are located in the lower level, south of the Periodicals Room.
North Library

The New Media Center has Open Access labs with an ideal set-up for a study group to work together on a project. (My students in Fall 1996 told me this was their favorite lab - great equipment and wonderfully helpful attendants.)

Academic Computing Services

The Office of Academic Computing Services is located in room 361 on the 3rd Floor of the LA5 classroom building.
ACS Student Computer Labs

The ACS Labs are located on the 3rd Floor of LA5 and are open seven days a week when the University is in session.

Working at Home
  • If you want to do your computer work from home or another location, you will need access to an Internet Service Provider (ISP), such as CompuServe, America On-Line, or AT&T World Net. You need an ISP that provides you with access to e-mail and the full graphics World Wide Web (not just LYNX-the text-only version of the Web).
  • As a registered student, you are also eligible to obtain free Internet access through the direct PPP access number at CSULB. Complete instructions for this access are explained on p. 8 of the Internet Access Tools. You must have a 28.8 bps modem and a CSULB computer account to access the Internet through this method. If you are outside the local calling area for the Long Beach campus, remember that you will be charged for a telephone toll call by your local telephone company.
  • Regardless of which Internet provider you use, your computer needs a high-speed modem, at least 14.4 bps and preferably 28.8 bps so you can download the Web's graphics files at a reasonable speed.
