Short Paper III

4/11/97

Your third Short Paper is due May 12 (approximately 600 words, 3 pages) discussing the philosophical materials developed in Unit III. Please do not do any research beyond the class readings and discussions.

DUE: Monday, May 12 (Unit III). Papers are due by midnight that day, either by e-mail or by fax to the department (985-7135). If you are unable to send the paper by e-mail or fax, you may submit the paper in hard-copy to my faculty mailbox (MHB-917) no later than 4 p.m. the day of the deadline. Late papers will be accepted for up to one week after the deadline, but will receive an automatic 4 point deduction.

ASSIGNMENT: Choose one (and only one) of the following discussion questions, based on the readings for Unit III.

  1. "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde: Put yourself in Wilde's theoretical "shoes." Now consider Plato's "The Republic" (Book X). Identify the passages with which you, as Wilde, most strongly disagree and explain your disagreement.
  2. "Of the Standard of Good Taste" by David Hume: discussion question #19
  3. "Freedom of Expression" Discussion question #1 (Wojnarowicz' posters on buses)
  4. "Government Funding and the First Amendment" Discussion question #2 ("should a government agency fund these projects…")

Your essay should adhere to good standards for composition. Check spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Grading will consider the comprehensiveness of your discussion, the range of reasons discussed, and your demonstrated understanding of the material in Unit III.
