Short Paper II

3/10/97

Your second Short Paper will be due Monday, March 31 (approximately 5 pages, 1000 words) discussing the philosophical materials developed in Unit II. Please do not do any research beyond the class readings and discussions.

Please submit your papers as a file attached to an e-mail message. If you are unable to do this because of technological problems, you may fax it to the department (562-985-7135) or leave a hard-copy print-out in my faculty mailbox in the Philosophy department office (MHB-917) (no later than 4 p.m. the day of the deadline).

DUE: Monday, March 31 (Unit II). Papers are due by midnight that Monday, either by e-mail or by fax to the department (985-7135). Papers submitted in hard-copy to my faculty mailbox (MHB-917) must be received no later than 4 p.m. the day of the deadline. Late papers will be accepted for up to one week after the deadline, but will receive an automatic 4 point deduction.

ASSIGNMENT: Choose one (and only one) of the following discussion questions, from the end of the on-line articles for Unit II:

  1. "The Ion" by Plato: discussion question 8.
  2. "The Republic" by Plato: discussion question 6
  3. "Poetics" by Aristotle: discussion question 2
  4. "Art" by Clive Bell: discussion question 5
  5. "What Is Art?" by Leo Tolstoy: discussion question 13

For whichever question you choose, your answer should demonstrate a detailed consideration of the text in question. Cite quotes and paraphrases from the text by paragraph or section number in parentheses. Please pursue the question you choose in depth and consider alternative interpretations for the issues at stake.

GRADING: This paper is worth up to 12 points

  • B+: 9 points
  • B: 8 points
  • B-: 7 points
  • C+: 6 points
  • C: 5 points
  • C-: 4 points
