Course Requirements

and Grading

Short Essay Papers (36 points): You will be required to write three short essay papers (approximately 5 pages, 1000 words each) discussing the philosophical materials developed in Units I, II, and III. These papers will not involve any research beyond the class readings and discussions. Additional information about the precise assignment will be given on-line at least two weeks before the deadline. You are strongly encouraged to submit your papers as a file attached to an e-mail message, which we will teach in the first month of the course.

GRADING: Each paper will be worth up to 12 points

DUE: Monday, February 24 (Unit I); Monday, March 31 (Unit II); Monday, May 12 (Unit III). Papers are due by midnight on the day of the deadline, either by e-mail or by fax to the department (562-985-7135). Late papers will be accepted for up to one week after the deadline, but will receive an automatic 4 point deduction.

On-Line Discussion Group Participation (12 points): Throughout the course, from February 24 - May 12, you should actively participate in the on-line discussion group, "Conferencing on the Web" (COW). You will receive training on this activity during the first month of the course. At least once a week, you should contribute your ideas to one of the on-going discussions. You can post a response to questions posed by others and/or frame your own questions about the course materials and class discussions. If technical difficulties make it impossible for you to post a message on the COW, you may substitute a message on the class e-mail list to the entire class, to receive credit for this part of the course.

GRADING:

High pass (outstanding participation all semester): 12 points

Pass (acceptable participation all semester): 6 points

Low Pass (some participation, some of the semester): 3 points

Fail: 0 points

Group projects (48 points total): For the final project for the course, you will be required to participate with a group of 4-6 students in the class on an independent project on an approved topic. Your group will select one work of art available on-line and consider it from the perspective of the various philosophers and theorists studied in Units I-III. You will be asked to identify on-line resources related to your project to recommend to the entire class and to post a clear statement of the issues and perspectives you will consider.

We expect to form the groups, based on preferences you will submit the first day of class, no later than February 10, so that you can start working with your group by late February.

On-line presentation: Your group should disseminate an overview of your project and suggested on-line resources to the class. You may either send a message to the class e-mail list or post a group Web page. This should be available seven (7) calendar days before your oral presentation to the class.

GRADING: up to 12 points (group grade)

Oral presentation: Your panel will make a one hour presentation to the entire class during the last three weeks of class.

GRADING: up to 12 points (individual grading)

Written presentation: Each person in the group will write your own final paper (10-15 pages) analyzing the art work and philosophical issues for your group project.

GRADING: up to 24 points (individual grading)

DUE: Monday, May 19, 5:00 p.m. (exam week)

BONUS: up to 4 additional points will be awarded for outstanding participation in in-class discussions and other course elements.

GRADUATE CREDIT
