Can Peer Education Prevent Risky Sex? At the World AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa, Dr. Donald Morisky, UCLA professor of public health, will share the results of how peer counseling influenced heterosexual men's sexual behavior in the Philippines. Morisky will address the conference on Wednesday, July 12.

Improving HIV Patients' Self-Care Gail Wyatt, a clinical psychologist at the UCLA AIDS Institute, discovered that HIV-infected people who receive one-on-one education show marked improvements in medication adherence, safer sex and psychological well-being. Wyatt will discuss her findings, which point to new clinical approaches for treating HIV-positive individuals, on Wednesday, July 12.

Ethnicity Influences STD Risk UCLA epidemiologist Nina Harawa found that having a non-monogamous partner more than doubled a woman's risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease (STD) - a predictor that spanned the ethnic spectrum. Yet the STD history of a woman who lived with her boyfriend or spouse varied dramatically by race, emphasizing the need to target men in certain cultures. Harawa will speak on Wednesday, July 12.

It Takes a Village Dr. Roger Detels, UCLA professor of public health and epidemiology, will describe the results of a unique community intervention program to reduce drug use in China. Detels addresses the conference on Monday, July 10.
